Violence shows no respite in the Buenos Aires suburbs. In less than 24 hours, four assailants were killed in three confrontations with police officers who defended themselves or came to the aid of neighbors. The toll includes a Federal Police corporal who was shot three times and remains in intensive care.
The first incident occurred yesterday at 5:20 p.m. in La Reja, Moreno district. A corporal from the National Judiciary Security Division, identified as Rodolfo Camaratta, heard the screams of a neighbor alerting about suspicious movements in a two-story house. As he approached, he encountered two assailants who had subdued the homeowner and were threatening his one-and-a-half-year-old son with a gun to his head.
The off-duty officer positioned himself next to the gray Honda pickup truck where the thieves had loaded stolen items. He identified himself as a security force member and ordered them to halt. The criminals tried to flee but could not maneuver the automatic vehicle. A shootout ensued, ending with both assailants killed. However, Camaratta was hit in the face, a shoulder, and the abdomen.
A video recorded by neighbors shows a relative aiding the corporal, who sat on the dirt street. Blood stained his Argentina national team jersey. He was rushed to the Mariano y Luciano de la Vega Hospital in Moreno, where he underwent surgery. He was later transferred to Churruca Hospital, where he remains in intensive care in critical condition. The assailants were found in possession of a Glock .40 caliber pistol and a .32 long revolver.
Almost simultaneously, in City Bell, La Plata district, a Federal Police officer riding a motorcycle on Camino Centenario was approached by two thieves. Unaware he was an undercover officer, they aimed at him to rob him. The officer identified himself, ordered them to halt, and fired. One of the criminals died at the scene; the other, seriously injured, was taken to San Roque Hospital in Gonnet, where he remains hospitalized under guard. A replica 9mm pistol was seized at the scene.
Today, in Gerli, Avellaneda district, a 71-year-old retired Federal Police non-commissioned officer killed one of two motorcycle thieves who tried to rob him of money he had just withdrawn from a currency exchange. According to his account, the criminals followed him from downtown Avellaneda to his home, ten blocks from Villa Sapito. Upon arrival, they mounted the sidewalk, aimed at him, and demanded the money. The retiree drew a .22 caliber pistol and fired at the one threatening him. The thief fell dead; his accomplice fled. Experts found a metal replica of a 9mm pistol in the deceased’s possession.
