Scaloni's Teacher: Luis De La Fuente, the Coach Who Led Spain to the Top of the 2026 World Cup

El profe de Scaloni: Luis De La Fuente, el DT que llevó a España a la cima del Mundial 2026

Luis de la Fuente is the man who returned Spain to the throne of world football. At the 2026 World Cup, his team swept through with a game of possession, high pressing, and absolute dominance. But his story did not begin on the big stage: this native of La Rioja built his reputation in the shadows, developing players and, curiously, a certain Lionel Scaloni.

In 2017, the current Argentine coach took the UEFA Pro course at the Royal Spanish Football Federation. One of his teachers was De la Fuente. Scaloni has publicly acknowledged the influence the Spanish coach had during his training, while De la Fuente often highlights the leadership ability and growth of his former student.

De la Fuente started in the youth divisions of Sevilla, but his true home was the Spanish national team. He coached the U-19, U-21, and U-23 sides, winning European Championships and an Olympic silver medal. There he shaped the generation that later triumphed with the senior team: Pedri, Gavi, Olmo… all passed through his hands.

When Luis Enrique left in 2022, the Federation did not hesitate. De la Fuente took over and within two years had already won the 2023 Nations League and the 2024 European Championship. His formula: tactical discipline, trust in young players, and relentless attack. «It’s not just about having the ball, it’s knowing what to do with it,» he repeats.

But the most surprising fact is his connection with Scaloni. The Argentine, a world champion, was his student. «He taught me that leadership is earned through work, not shouting,» Scaloni said. De la Fuente, humble, responds: «Lionel already had everything, he just needed a push.»

Spain’s success in 2026 is no coincidence. De la Fuente built a team that mixes youth and experience, with a style that suffocates the opponent. Against Brazil in the semifinals, Spain had 72% possession. Against France in the final, they came back with two goals from their youngsters. «This is what we dreamed of from the youth ranks,» he declared.

Today, Luis de la Fuente is the most sought-after coach. His contract with Spain ends in 2027, but offers from top clubs are already circulating. However, he remains faithful to his method: «My place is where I can develop players, no matter the level.»

The story of this coach is that of a man who never sought the spotlight, but ended up lighting the way for a generation. And incidentally, he gave a lesson to his most famous student: football can also be taught.
