Argentina’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup final after eliminating England left an image that transcended the result. The flag reading “Las Malvinas son argentinas” displayed by the players on the field in Atlanta stirred emotions in thousands of Argentines, but above all in Marcelo Rosasco, a war veteran, who reflected on the event and explained that the action by Lionel Scaloni’s squad represented a claim more powerful than thousands of Argentines have upheld for decades.
The victory in Atlanta had a meaning that went far beyond sports. The clash with England always awakens a special sensitivity due to the history between the two countries, and this time the Argentine triumph was accompanied by a gesture that quickly spread around the world. The footballers unfurled a flag in defense of sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, an image that gained even more strength after the restrictions imposed by FIFA on demonstrations linked to the cause.
Putting that feeling into words was Rosasco, a journalist, teacher, writer and ex-combatant, who landed on April 11, 1982 in the Falklands, when he had just turned 19 and was part of the Commando Company of the 3rd Infantry Regiment. He was a scribe, a kind of journalistic writer who passed on internal reports. He stayed 64 days, until June 16, when he returned to the mainland. More than four decades later, he says that match stirred memories impossible to separate from personal and collective history.
For Rosasco, it was never in question that the match against England did not decide sovereignty issues. However, he stressed that the symbolic weight was enormous and said that emotional burden accompanied the team throughout the semifinal. In that sense, he explained: “I don’t think there was a single player who believed this was just a football match. Evidently they must have felt some contagion from friends, family, relatives, acquaintances. Several of these boys from the Argentine national team have a history; some chord was struck.”
He also considered it impossible for the footballers to face the commitment as if it were any other match. According to him, the members of the Argentine national team inevitably received the impact of family, friends and acquaintances who live the Falklands cause with enormous sensitivity. In his view, facing England could never generate the same emotions as playing against any other rival in the 2026 World Cup.
Analyzing the image left by the Argentine national team after the final whistle, Rosasco said that the gesture with the flag synthesized a historical claim and stated: “This group was up to what many of us have been demanding for a long time.” He also explained that this recognition was not only symbolic, but was also backed by the attitude the team showed on the field. For him, both things were worthy of what the Falklands feat represents.
Later he deepened that idea and suggested that the victory over England should leave a lesson that goes far beyond football. Rosasco considered that if society knows how to take advantage of this moment, it can become an opportunity to continue raising awareness about the Falklands cause and the interests that run through Argentine history. In that context, he urged that the emotion of the semifinal not be reduced to the memory of a great performance or a possible world title.
He also called for Argentine athletes to continue carrying the Falklands flag whenever they represent the country in any international competition. For Rosasco, that commitment does not belong solely to a generation of veterans, but is part of Argentine identity and must remain alive regardless of Sunday’s result or any title the Argentine national team may win in the 2026 World Cup.
The ex-combatant even went further by expressing his hope that what happened in Atlanta will serve to mobilize society. “May this be an energy that mobilizes us, that awakens us,” he said, before stressing that he hopes Argentine athletes will continue to carry the Falklands flag whenever they represent the country in any international competition.
