He's Not Leaving! Atlético Madrid Shuts Door on Barcelona for Julián Álvarez: 'Not Even 200 Million Will Buy Him'

Amid World Cup fever, the Colchoneros have come out to quash rumors and shield 'La Araña'. CEO Miguel Ángel Gil was blunt: no offer tempts the club, not even an astronomical figure. He also criticized the Argentine striker's entourage.

¡No se va! Atlético de Madrid le cierra la puerta a Barcelona por Julián Álvarez: 'Ni 200 millones lo compran'

The football world has its eyes on the grand final of the 2026 World Cup, where Argentina and Spain will face off on Sunday in New Jersey. But in Spain, the transfer market never rests. And the name of Julián Álvarez, the Argentine gem seeking his second World Cup, became the center of a saga that ended with a door slammed shut.

It turns out that Atlético Madrid, fed up with rumors linking ‘La Araña’ to Barcelona, decided to nip it in the bud. Club CEO Miguel Ángel Gil issued a statement leaving no room for doubt: “The club’s will is clear. We have made it known to the player, the fans, and the Barça president. I have no doubt that Atlético is the best place in the world for Julián.”

But he didn’t stop there. Gil went further and, in a tone that brooked no argument, declared: “I recently heard the president say that the offer he made was not infinite, and our response is indeed infinite: we do not want to transfer him. We did not accept an offer of 100 million euros, nor will we accept one of 150 or 200.”

In other words: not even a suitcase full of cash will take ‘La Araña’ away. The message was a direct blow to Joan Laporta, the Barça chief, who had hinted that the club wouldn’t break the bank. Well, Atlético responded with a resounding “no.”

But it doesn’t end there. Gil also took aim at the player’s entourage. “Julián has been poorly advised since the end of the season,” he fired off. And he added, with a hint of confidence: “That allows me to think that his performance and behavior will be those of a very good player, a good person, and a very good professional.”

In other words, the executive is telling the striker to stop messing around, that the Metropolitano is his home. And with a contract until 2030, there’s no rush. Álvarez, coming off an up-and-down season under Diego Simeone, will have to wait to make the leap to a bigger club. At least for now.

The news came as a cold shower in Barcelona, which dreamed of building a powerhouse with ‘La Araña’ as its standard-bearer. But Atlético, true to its style, stood firm and said, “this far and no further.” Now, all eyes are back on the World Cup final, where Julián will seek to make history. But the background noise, with this door slammed shut, won’t be silenced so easily.

Gil capo total, mandalos a freír churros. Ni 200 palos verdes ni en pedo se lo llevan. ¡Arriba el Colchonero carajo!
