Tragedia en la final: dos muertos por paro cardíaco en pleno Argentina vs. España

The night that was supposed to be glorious for the Argentine national team ended bathed in blood and tears. During the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, two fans lost their lives due to cardiac arrests in Buenos Aires. The first, a 67-year-old man, collapsed at his home in the Monserrat neighborhood around 8 p.m. SAME doctors arrived quickly but could not revive him. The second, an 88-year-old man, was admitted to Durand Hospital with respiratory difficulties and never left. He died five hours later, around 10 p.m.

But the tragedy did not end there. A third man, 72, is hospitalized in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit of Álvarez Hospital, with a guarded prognosis. He had suffered severe chest pain and breathing difficulties. Doctors are fighting for his life as the entire country wonders if so much suffering is worth it for a soccer match.

This is not the first time it has happened. During the quarterfinal against Switzerland, SAME had already reported the death of a 51-year-old man from a heart attack and six other cardiac emergencies. But this time the magnitude was greater. The celebrations for the grit of the Scaloneta, despite the defeat, also left a trail of injuries. A 47-year-old man fell four meters at the corner of Lavalle and 9 de Julio, fracturing his left foot with dislocation. A 40-year-old woman became ill and lost consciousness, unable to recover on site.

SAME, led by Alberto Crescenti, treated alcohol intoxication, blows, cuts, and even a panic attack. A 26-year-old man arrived with a dangerously low heart rate after drinking alcohol, and another 23-year-old refused medical help. There were also fights: a 34-year-old woman suffered superficial wounds in Cerrito, and a man was hit by a bottle, suffering cuts to his hand and scalp. At Plaza Inmigrantes de Armenia, three men were assisted after a brawl, though none required hospitalization.

Meanwhile, the Argentine national team lost the final to Spain, but fans took to the streets to celebrate the players’ effort. A cruel paradox: celebrating a defeat while two families mourn their dead. How far does passion go? How many more lives will be lost? The question hangs in the air, as SAME continues to count the bodies.
