Escándalo en Bolivia: crean comisión para investigar a Zapatero y Arce por tráfico de influencias

In a move that promises to shake up the political landscape, the Senate of Bolivia decided to create a special commission to investigate a scandalous case of influence peddling involving former Spanish Prime Minister José Zapatero and current Bolivian President Luis Arce. The news landed like a bombshell in the corridors of power, and there is already talk of a plot involving millions of dollars and international connections.

According to information held by the Upper House, the commission will analyze the alleged efforts made by Zapatero on behalf of Grupo Gloria, a business conglomerate with a strong presence in the region. It all started from a Spanish police report that, according to reliable sources, mentions payments of 200,000 euros linked to these efforts. The goal? To obtain benefits or contracts in Bolivian territory.

The Senate’s decision is no small matter: it is an investigation that directly targets two high-profile figures. Zapatero, former head of the Spanish government, and Arce, the president of Bolivia, are now under the scrutiny of a commission that promises to leave no stone unturned. The senators who pushed for the measure insist it is necessary to clarify whether there was influence peddling and whether public or private funds were used to grease the wheels.

The Spanish police report, allegedly leaked to the local press, details alleged meetings and efforts that Zapatero supposedly made to pave the way for Grupo Gloria in Bolivia. Although neither Zapatero nor Arce have made official statements, the versions circulating in the Senate corridors speak of a plot that could have ramifications on both sides of the Atlantic.

The commission, which has already begun its work, has the mission of gathering evidence, summoning witnesses, and, if appropriate, filing criminal complaints. Opposition senators, who have been denouncing for months an alleged «brotherhood» between Arce’s government and certain business sectors, see this investigation as a golden opportunity to put the ruling party on the ropes.

From the ruling party, however, they are trying to downplay the scandal. Some spokespersons for the government party claim that this is a political maneuver to wear down Arce’s administration, and that the commission will find nothing illegal. However, people on the street do not believe it: social media exploded with memes and criticism, and the news is already trending in Bolivia.

The fact is that the case has all the ingredients of a political soap opera: money, power, former presidents, and a sitting president. Was Zapatero a simple intermediary or was it a lobby in exchange for favors? Did Arce know about these efforts? Did Grupo Gloria pay to obtain benefits? These are questions the commission must answer, and in the meantime, uncertainty and controversy grow.

The Bolivian Senate does not take these matters lightly: in the past, other investigative commissions have ended in prosecutions and convictions. Therefore, all eyes are on this new chapter in local politics. Meanwhile, from Spain, Zapatero’s inner circle remains silent, and from Grupo Gloria, a spokesperson hinted that they will make themselves available to the courts to clarify any doubts.

The commission has 90 days to present its conclusions. Will it be enough to uncover the truth? Or will it fizzle out like so many other investigations? For now, the only certainty is that the scandal is already served, and all of Bolivia awaits answers.
