Milei Fires Alejandro Nimo, the Official Who Clashed with the Ambassador in Spain

Javier Milei’s government shook up the Argentine Embassy in Spain with a decree that leaves out Alejandro Nimo, the Investment Promotion attaché who had been clashing head-on with Ambassador Wenceslao Bunge. The measure was made official this Tuesday through Decree 588/2026, published in the Official Gazette, and bears the signatures of Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno and Economy Minister Luis Caputo.

“The dismissal of lawyer Marcelo Alejandro Nimo as Specialized Attaché in the Area of Investment Promotion and International Trade of the Embassy of Argentina to the Kingdom of Spain is ordered,” reads Article 1 of the regulation. The official argument: to seek “better efficiency in the functioning of the aforementioned representation of Argentina abroad.” But the reality, according to sources at the diplomatic mission, is that the internal conflict between Nimo and Bunge had become unsustainable.

Nimo, a 46-year-old lawyer who was a councilor in Avellaneda and president of Pro in that district, is not a career diplomat. He arrived in Madrid in August 2024 with a low profile but with a high-profile sponsorship: Spanish economist Jesús Huerta de Soto, a reference of the Austrian school and admired by Milei. He quickly became a reference for Spanish libertarians, who maintain weekly contact with the President via WhatsApp.

The internal conflict erupted in April, when Nimo publicly denounced that Bunge had taken away his office. “By decision of Ambassador Bunge, they have taken away the office where I worked and attended to businessmen investing in Argentina, which had become a symbol and a meeting point for Milei’s admirers,” he wrote on his X account, accompanied by photos showing an empty space.

In that statement, Nimo described the measure as an “aggression” and targeted the ambassador: “What worries me about Bunge is not a decision about an office; what really worries me is his lack of commitment to shrinking the state and complying with the fiscal responsibility premises that our President preaches. The times I tried to bring him a plan to reduce embassy spending, he refused to even receive me.”

The fight did not end there. Nimo had also repeatedly conveyed his discomfort to Milei about feeling excluded from the embassy’s daily work. According to sources consulted, coexistence had been a living hell since the tenure of the previous ambassador, Roberto Bosch, who was removed at the end of 2024. Officials and employees spoke of a “bad work environment” and mutual distrust.

The now former official has not yet commented on his dismissal, but continues to spread messages in favor of the President. His influence in the Casa Rosada was such that last year he was rumored as a possible ambassador, until Bunge was finally appointed. In an interview, Nimo had criticized the working conditions of diplomats: “I don’t want a residence, three maids, two drivers, a palace, security. I want to be a modern ambassador, who uses his own car and lives in his own house.”

The question that remains floating is whether this departure is a triumph for Bunge or a sign that Milei does not tolerate internal conflicts in his ranks. For now, Nimo’s silence is deafening.
