The asset report on Manuel Adorni received by prosecutor Gerardo Pollicita confirmed the direction of the case for alleged illicit enrichment and strengthened suspicions about the gaps in the former Chief of Staff’s finances. But it also brought a surprise: the work of the General Directorate of Economic and Financial Advisory for Investigations (DAFI) provided new information on the former official in the area of cryptocurrencies, a blurry area of his assets and a sensitive topic for the government due to the $LIBRA case.
The cryptocurrency trail already existed in the investigation. It opened when the first responses from digital platforms arrived, revealing operations that were not under judicial scrutiny. It was handled with extreme secrecy. Investigators mapped a network connecting accounts that belong to or came into contact with Adorni’s, through which around 100,000 dollars were allegedly moved, according to a source. But now, with the new DAFI report, that virtual map has expanded.
When activity in Comodoro Py resumes after the winter recess, in two weeks, the prosecutor will demand Adorni’s first explanations in the judicial arena. There will be a special chapter dedicated to digital money, on which the former official must account to avoid being called for questioning.
The report that arrived at the prosecutor’s office is a key piece. It is an accounting translation of everything investigators gathered in the case file: consumption, deeds, renovations, invoices, travel, bank movements, loans, and cash expenses. DAFI organized that information, cross-referenced it with the income declared by Adorni and his wife, Bettina Angeletti, and determined whether the evolution of their assets and spending level could be sustained by the documented income.
Pollicita adjusted the working guidelines with DAFI and requested that the new responses arriving in the case file be incorporated. Thus, the report included information sent by two cryptocurrency platforms, Binance and Lemon, where Adorni had accounts, as the official himself acknowledged when he retroactively corrected his sworn statements.
In an interview, the then Chief of Staff stated that the main change in those public records was the inclusion of around 500,000 dollars, of which 200,000 corresponded to undeclared savings and 300,000 to profit from an early bet on Bitcoin. The correlate in the sworn statement was the appearance of 565,000 dollars at the beginning of the 2023 period, under the label «sale of assets.» From the documentation submitted to the Anti-Corruption Office, it does not appear that those funds correspond to the sale of Bitcoin.
Adorni specified three positions in crypto assets at the end of 2023: one for 11,019 dollars, another for 2,605, and another for 1,069, totaling 14,695 dollars in digital currency. At the end of 2024, the digital currency category disappears entirely from the list of declared assets.
In the sworn statements, the central point is the 565,000 dollars from «sale of assets» that he incorporated in 2023 and allowed him to restore balance in the income-expenditure equation. The 2024 and 2025 statements show that this cash was reduced: at the end of 2023, the 565,000 dollars became 513,000; during 2024, it fell to 388,961 dollars; in 2025, it stood at 209,961 dollars. That is, Adorni may have used 355,038 of the 565,000 dollars he had incorporated in the 2023 rectification.
