In an interview that set off alarm bells, Alejandrina Barry, former Frente de Izquierda legislator and a leader of the Centro de Profesionales por los Derechos Humanos alongside Myriam Bregman, took aim at Jorge Macri’s administration at the helm of Buenos Aires City. The activist did not mince words: she described the macrista repressive policy as «a display of authoritarianism and social disciplining.»
Barry explained that behind the operations at the Obelisco and other key points, there is a calculated plan. «To implement austerity plans, which are increasingly unpopular, they need repression not only of social protest but of society as a whole. That’s why Jorge Macri’s policy is one of social disciplining, so that everyone feels afraid to go out, even to have a joy like celebrating the World Cup,» she fired.
The former legislator did not limit herself to denouncing state violence. She also targeted traditional political leadership. «There is an attempt by the mainstream parties to make people think that the way to change things is to wait until 2027. But we, from the PTS with our colleague Myriam Bregman, see that both with Milei and with Jorge Macri, we have to confront them now,» she argued.
Barry was blunt when referring to the normalization of repression. «These situations of violence we see in the City cannot be normalized. We cannot say ‘oh well, let’s wait for him to keep repressing us for another year and a bit and then see in 2027 who wins.’ That’s no longer acceptable,» she stated.
As a counterpoint, she highlighted the resistance already brewing. «There are actors in the City who are standing up. There were takeovers in secondary schools, particularly at Yrurtia School, Lola Mora, Nina Marschall, against Jorge Macri’s BA Aprende education plan and against what many kids told me. They are organizing against authoritarianism in schools because this repressive policy of Jorge Macri in the social sphere is also expressed through every institution,» she detailed.
And she cited the student struggle as an example: «At Yrurtia, they managed to reverse the implementation of the reform. It is an example that must be widely disseminated, showing that if you organize and fight, you can confront them.»
Barry’s statements come in a context of growing social conflict in the City, where police operations at demonstrations and the repression at the Obelisco during the World Cup celebrations drew strong criticism from human rights organizations. The former legislator focuses on the political intentionality behind every baton blow.
