In a corner of the Buenos Aires suburbs, the dream of some public school kids turned into an unforgettable postcard. The fifth-grade students of Primary School No. 7 ‘Combatientes de Malvinas’, located in the 9 de Abril neighborhood of Esteban Echeverría, wrote letters to the Argentine National Team and, to everyone’s surprise, received a direct reply from defender Nicolás Tagliafico.
The initiative arose in the classroom as part of a pedagogical project that links the World Cup with historical memory. ‘We are working on the World Cup within the framework of the 50th anniversary of the Civic-Military Dictatorship, and obviously we do not fail to mention and compare it with the 1978 World Cup. That is why the children of 5th A and 5th C freely expressed their ideas, emotions, and best wishes directed to our Argentine National Team, privileges that in another era were not had,’ explained teacher Karina, who promoted the activity.
What seemed like a distant dream became reality when the Olympique Lyonnais defender and 2022 Qatar World Cup champion picked up his phone and recorded a message for the kids. ‘Hello to all the 5th grade students of the school «COMBATIENTE DE MALVINAS». Thank you for the letters, my family and I were very moved reading them. Your words of encouragement fill our souls. Thank you for wanting to be like me in the future, never stop dreaming and fight for your dreams, reaching the desired goal is not a miracle, but effort. Kisses to all,’ said Tagliafico in the video that quickly went viral among the educational community.
The news hit like a wave of joy in the 9 de Abril neighborhood. The kids, their families, and teachers couldn’t believe that a National Team idol had given them such a gesture. ‘It is recognition of all the work we do in the classroom, for writing, for expression. Public school is not just content, it is a space where bonds are built and confidence is fostered that dreams can come true when there are collective projects,’ highlighted a source from the institution.
This type of experience shows that, despite cuts and discourses that despise the public, the school remains a beacon of opportunities. In a context where public education is attacked by the powerful, these kids and their teacher demonstrated that creativity and effort can open unexpected doors. Tagliafico’s response not only moved people but also highlighted the daily work of thousands of teachers who, despite everything, continue to bet on teaching and their students’ dreams.
The community of Esteban Echeverría celebrates this bond between the public school and the Argentine National Team, a link that transcends the ball and dives into the emotion of a neighborhood that, for a while, felt like world champion.
