Teacher strike and cool weather: how Monday, August 3 affects the AMBA

Monday, August 3 starts with two issues that impact the daily routine of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA): a national teachers’ strike called by the Confederation of Education Workers (Ctera) and a forecast that anticipates showers and storms towards the afternoon. Ctera called for a cessation of activities this Monday, on the first business day after the winter holidays in the City and province of Buenos Aires. The union justified the measure due to «the government’s persistent refusal to convene the national teachers’ bargaining table,» according to a statement released on its social media. ATE, Conadu, and Conadu Histórica joined the measure, while CTA-A and CTA-T expressed their support.

The scope of the strike is broad: it affects all educational levels and also other services. ATE reported that there is «nationwide adherence» and that minimum guards are guaranteed in hospitals and emergency care in centers for children, adolescents, and the elderly. Additionally, affected services include waste collection, education assistants, urban guard, migration, health controls at ports and customs, radio operators of public media, forest fire management personnel, traffic officers, air traffic controllers, CNRT, and maintenance of nuclear plants, among others. In the case of ANAC, only health and state flights will be guaranteed. PAMI and Anses will only handle emergencies.

On the government side, the Ministry of Human Capital announced a «sample inspection» in schools across the country to verify compliance with the 75% service coverage, considered essential by the new labor modernization law. «In the event of verification of non-compliance with this regulation, protocols will be activated to apply the corresponding sanctions,» said the ministry headed by Sandra Pettovello. The Secretary of Labor, Employment, and Social Security confirmed to La Nación that there will be sampling and that, if non-compliance is proven, the application of fines to unions will be analyzed.

The weather: cool, humid, and with a risk of showers

According to the SMN, the day in the AMBA will have a minimum temperature of 13 degrees and a maximum of 16, with mostly cloudy skies and light easterly winds (7 to 12 km/h). For the afternoon, the agency forecasts showers with a probability of precipitation between 10% and 40%. Towards the evening, the rains would ease and the sky would remain mostly cloudy, with temperatures dropping to 14 degrees.

The specialized site Meteored presents a different forecast: it anticipates «weak» rains around 10 a.m. and possible storms between 12 and 2 p.m., with precipitation probabilities of 60% and 70% respectively. Then, the sky would remain covered until around 8 p.m., when it would begin to clear. This discrepancy between sources is common in short-term forecasts, but it is worth keeping in mind when planning outdoor activities.

While the AMBA has no alerts, the SMN maintains warnings in several provinces. Chaco, Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Formosa, and Santa Fe are under yellow alert for storms; Mendoza has an orange alert for snowfall and yellow for winds; Neuquén, a warning for snowfall; and Santa Cruz, for rains. A yellow alert indicates the possibility of phenomena capable of causing damage and temporary interruptions, so it is recommended to follow official updates.
