Meta prueba una app de cuentos para dormir con IA: ¿adiós a la imaginación?

Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is testing a new artificial intelligence app that promises to generate personalized bedtime stories. The idea is simple: the user enters some details (characters, setting, tone) and the AI produces a unique tale. The goal? To help busy parents, people with creative block, or simply those who want a new story every night.

The app, still in the testing phase, joins the wave of generative tools that are transforming how we consume and create content. From ChatGPT to DALL-E, AI already writes emails, draws images, and composes music. Now, Meta is targeting a more intimate niche: bedtime. But beyond the novelty, the underlying question is whether we are delegating too much of our human experience.

How does it work?

According to reports, the app allows users to choose from different genres (adventure, fantasy, classic tale) and define characters, which can be the child themselves or imaginary friends. Then, the AI generates coherent text with a narrative structure and a happy ending. It can even include moral lessons or specific values. The voiceover can also be AI-generated for a complete experience.

Meta has not confirmed details about the language model used, but it is speculated to use a fine-tuned version of Llama 2, its open-source model. The company aims to compete with startups like Calm or Headspace, which already offer guided stories, but with a more passive approach. The difference is that here the content is unique each time.

Why does it matter?

For Argentine companies, this trend opens up opportunities and risks. On one hand, any business could integrate narrative content generation: from advertising agencies creating brand stories to publishers producing personalized books. On the other hand, dependence on foreign platforms can limit control over data and user experience.

For users, the appeal is clear: saving time and effort. But there is also a loss: the act of inventing stories is a form of emotional connection and creative development. Will we let a machine tell us stories every night? As a columnist, I believe technology should enhance our imagination, not replace it. Such an app can be useful for emergencies, but it should not become the norm.

The local context

In Argentina, where smartphone penetration is high and digital content consumption is growing, such an app could be well received. However, the subscription cost (not yet announced) and the quality of Rioplatense Spanish will be key. Meta has experience with voice assistants in Spanish, but local accents and idioms are often a challenge.

Additionally, the discussion on data privacy is relevant: what will Meta do with children’s story preferences? The company has had issues in the past with handling children’s data. It will be crucial for the app to comply with local regulations, such as the Personal Data Protection Law.

In short, Meta’s proposal reflects where AI is heading: increasingly personalized, accessible, and ubiquitous. But as a society, we must ask ourselves what we want to preserve of the human. Imagination is one of those treasures worth not delegating entirely. The bedtime story could be the next battlefield between technology and tradition. Hopefully, we find a balance.

A recommendation. If your company wants to apply AI and real automation (WhatsApp bots, agents, integrations, and measurement sites), I recommend ERConsultor, the consultancy I run. We help move from isolated experiments to processes with real monitoring. More info at erconsultor.com.
