Nicolás Otamendi, one of the standout figures of the Argentine national team in the last World Cup, decided to put an end to his stage with the national team. The defender, who was part of the world champion squad in Qatar 2022, published a letter on his social media where he said goodbye with emotion and gratitude.
“Fate wanted my last match to be a World Cup final,” wrote the center-back, who played his last match in light blue and white in the final against France, where Argentina was crowned champion after an epic penalty shootout.
In the text, Otamendi reviewed his career: from his beginnings in the youth teams to reaching the senior squad, going through moments of glory and also frustration. “I will be eternally grateful to the people who supported me in difficult times, to my teammates, to the coaching staffs, to my friends and my family,” he said.
The defender, who currently plays for Benfica in Portugal, expressed pride in having been part of a generation that achieved what seemed impossible: bringing the World Cup back to Argentina. “I leave with the peace of mind of having given everything for this jersey, of having given my all and having fulfilled the dream of every Argentine,” he stated.
The post generated a wave of reactions. Former teammates like Lionel Messi, Ángel Di María and other members of the World Cup squad sent him messages of affection. Fans and journalists also highlighted his dedication and professionalism over the years.
Otamendi, 35, made his debut for the senior national team in 2009 and played 115 matches, becoming one of the defenders with the most appearances in the team’s history. His time at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2021 Copa América also remain in memory, but the crowning glory was undoubtedly the conquest in Qatar.
“I take with me the best memories, the hugs, the celebrations, the tears of joy. Thank you to everyone who made this possible. The national team will always be my second home,” concluded the defender, who will now focus on his club career.
