The Deliberative Council of Córdoba is set to approve this Thursday a reform that shakes up the city’s transportation system. The easing of the taxi and remise regime promises to change the rules of the game for more than 2,800 vehicles that circulate on Córdoba’s streets.
The initiative, which is already generating controversy, eliminates in one fell swoop the municipal fees that weighed on drivers. In addition, it extends the maximum permitted vehicle age from 8 to 10 years, a measure that drivers have been demanding for years. Technical vehicle inspections (ITV) are also reduced: from 4 annual checks to just 2.
But that’s not all. The project eliminates the obligation to join central stations or agencies, leaving that decision in the hands of each driver. Private fare caps are thrown in the trash, allowing free negotiation between driver and passenger. A direct blow to state control that many call «liberation» and others «anarchy.»
The reform also eliminates the quarterly fee of 40 flag drops and the tax on license transfers. «This removes fiscal pressure on workers who face high fixed costs,» explained sources from the Council. Additionally, the maximum driving age is extended to 76 years, a measure aimed at retaining experienced drivers.
Digitalization comes hand in hand with the Mi Docta platform, where all documentation will be channeled. Public lotteries to assign vacant licenses will be replaced by a digital registration system. And holders with multiple plates will only need one additional driver per unit, reducing bureaucratic requirements.
«This new scenario provides predictability for small investors looking to renew their units without state surcharges,» say the promoters of the measure. Administrative deregulation, according to them, consolidates a more competitive and dynamic market for the benefit of all residents.
However, not everyone is happy. Critical voices warn that the reduction of controls could compromise road safety and service quality. «Fewer inspections and older vehicles is a recipe for disaster,» fired an opposition councilor. The mother of Agostina Vega, a victim of a traffic accident, denounced a «pact of impunity» in the Council, although her complaint is not directly linked to this reform.
Meanwhile, taxi and remise drivers celebrate. «This gives us back the freedom to work without the state suffocating us,» said a driver consulted. The city of Córdoba prepares for a new chapter in its transportation history, with more flexible rules but also with questions about the future of safety and competition.
