¡ATENTO SCALONI! Suiza eliminó a Colombia por penales y será el rival de Argentina en cuartos

Colombia’s dream went down the drain. In a match that promised fire but ended up being a bore, Switzerland beat Colombia 4-3 on penalties and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup. Now, the opponent for the Argentine national team is set: the Europeans will be the hurdle to overcome next Saturday, July 11 at 10:00 PM (Argentine time) at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

The match was a fiasco. The first 90 minutes were a festival of inaccuracies and fouls, with very few clear chances. Colombia tried something at the 20th minute with a shot from Gustavo Puerta that Gregor Kobel saved, but then everything was monotony. Switzerland responded with a shot from Fabian Rieder and another from Dan Ndoye, both controlled by Camilo Vargas. The score remained 0-0 and everything went to extra time.

In extra time, Colombia seemed to wake up. At the 98th minute, Jhon Lucumí headed a corner from Juan Fernando Quintero and Kobel made a saving hand. Then, Jámilton Campaz tried from distance and the Swiss goalkeeper responded again. In the second half of extra time, Campaz had the clearest chance: he received a rebound from Granit Xhaka but couldn’t finish under the crossbar. The match went to penalties.

And there Switzerland showed its teeth. The shootout was a back-and-forth: Quintero opened for Colombia, Xhaka equalized; Sánchez hit his shot off the crossbar, Amdouni put Switzerland ahead; Campaz equalized, Hernández missed; Itten made it 3-2, Díaz equalized; and Ruben Vargas sealed the story with a cross-shot. Kobel, the star, guessed several but didn’t save any; even so, the Swiss were more accurate.

Argentina is the only South American team still alive in the tournament. Scaloni already has to start studying an opponent that gives nothing away. Switzerland arrives at the quarterfinals with sky-high morale after leaving Algeria (2-0) and now Colombia in its wake. It will be a clash of styles: Argentine magic against Swiss solidity. Can the national team break the European lock? Saturday will start to define it.
