Brazil on the Couch: Press Tears Into Ancelotti After Humiliation Against Norway

Brasil al diván: la prensa descuartiza a Ancelotti tras la humillación ante Noruega

Sunday night will be etched in the memory of Brazilian fans. The team led by Carlo Ancelotti fell 2-1 to Norway in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, and the dream of a sixth title vanished sooner than expected. The press reaction was immediate: on Monday, the front pages of Brazil’s main newspapers exploded against the Italian coach and put the future of the Seleção under scrutiny.

“National shame,” Folha de S.Paulo headlined on its cover, accompanying a photo of Erling Haaland celebrating the winning goal. The São Paulo newspaper did not spare adjectives: “Brazil’s worst performance in World Cups since 1990.” In the same vein, O Globo opened with a resounding “And now, who’s next?” and a detailed analysis of which players should hang up their boots or step aside.

The main target is Ancelotti. Brazilian media agree that the coach never managed to imprint a style on the team, which always relied on individual flashes from Neymar and Vinícius Jr. “Ancelotti arrived as a savior and leaves as a ghost,” columnist Juca Kfouri fired on UOL Esporte. The defeat to Norway, a team that had never advanced past the round of 16, was the last straw.

But not everything is the Italian’s fault. The press also points to the CBF leadership, which bet everything on a short-term project and now must rebuild from scratch. “Neymar’s cycle is over, and with it, an era of frustrations,” Lance! declared. The Al-Hilal star announced that this was his last World Cup, leaving a void that will be hard to fill.

The front pages also reflect the pain of a fan base that can no longer bear more disappointments. “Brazil cries,” Extra headlined, with a photo of a child in a yellow jersey with tears in his eyes. On social media, the hashtag #ForaAncelotti became a national trend.

Meanwhile, Norway celebrates its passage to the quarterfinals, where it will face Spain. Haaland, scorer of both goals, became the hero of a nation that vibrates with its team. For Brazil, however, a long and painful process of mourning and self-criticism begins. The question hanging in the air is just one: who will be the next coach and which players will be part of the new cycle? The answer, for now, is a mystery.
