This Monday, July 6, starts with a freezing panorama across much of the country. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued a yellow alert for extreme cold covering 17 provinces, in addition to warnings for rain, snow, and strong winds. The population must prepare for a frigid day, with wind chills in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) not exceeding 13 degrees.
The yellow alert for extreme cold is in effect in the City and province of Buenos Aires, northeastern Chubut, Entre Ríos, Santa Fe, Corrientes, Córdoba, northern San Luis, northwestern Mendoza, Tucumán, and southern La Rioja. According to the SMN, this warning level implies a «mild to moderate effect on health» and temperatures that «can be dangerous, especially for at-risk groups.»
Given this scenario, the agency recommended avoiding prolonged exposure to cold outdoors, dressing in multiple layers of light clothing, keeping indoor spaces safely heated, avoiding sudden temperature changes, staying well hydrated, and not consuming alcoholic beverages. They asked to pay special attention to children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with chronic diseases.
In addition to the cold, there is a yellow alert for rain in Tierra del Fuego, where persistent precipitation is expected with accumulations between 10 and 30 millimeters, which could occur as mixed rain and snow. In southwestern Santa Cruz, Río Negro, and Neuquén, another alert is in effect for snow, with accumulations of 10 to 20 centimeters, which could be exceeded locally. There is also a chance of rain or sleet in low-lying areas.
Strong winds are also a factor: Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego are under a yellow alert for westerly winds with speeds between 40 and 60 kilometers per hour and gusts that could reach 90 kilometers per hour.
In the AMBA, the low started at 3°C and the high will reach 13°C, with morning fog and a 10% chance of rain. Tuesday is expected to see a slight thermal rebound but the sky will remain cloudy. In the province of Buenos Aires, the low will be 0°C and the high 11°C, with fog and winds up to 31 km/h.
The rest of the country also suffers the rigor of winter: in Córdoba the high will be 16°C and the low 0°C; in Tucumán, 16°C and 3°C; in Santa Fe, 14°C and -2°C; in Entre Ríos, 13°C and -2°C; in Jujuy, 12°C and 5°C; in Salta, 12°C and 6°C; in Misiones, 13°C and 10°C; in La Rioja, 15°C and 3°C; in Santiago del Estero, 16°C and 2°C; in San Luis, 15°C and 0°C; in San Juan, 16°C and 1°C; in Mendoza, 13°C and -2°C; in Río Negro, 9°C and 0°C; in Chubut, 11°C and -2°C; and in Santa Cruz, 8°C and -1°C.
The SMN insists that the population take precautions: do not expose themselves to the cold, dress warmly, and keep homes safely heated. Winter gives no respite and the yellow alert extends across the length and breadth of the country.
