Carlos Mac Allister explodes: 'There was no conspiracy, Spain was better and that's it'

In the midst of the scandal that erupted after the Argentine National Team’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the final, Carlos Mac Allister, father of midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, broke his silence to deny any conspiracy theories. In statements to Radio La Red, the former Ferro, Argentinos Juniors, Boca and Racing player confessed that he himself fell into doubt and wrote to his son to find out what had happened in the locker room before the match.

“I wrote to Alexis: ‘Hey, what happened in the locker room? Did something happen?’ I fell into the same logic of doubt. If I fell into the logic of doubt, if something had happened my son would have told me right away, because we are always talking. Imagine everyone else!”, he recounted. Alexis’s response was blunt: there was no plot, but a tactical talk on how to approach the game.

“He told me no, that they were talking about going out to play, in the football sense, of playing, touching, rotating, triangulating, not kicking it up, not splitting the ball. They were referring to that,” explained Carlos Mac Allister. The former player went further and stated: “Everyone knows and is clear about it. We played against Spain and they were better. It will hurt us for a while, but we have to understand that sometimes there is someone better than you. That doesn’t mean you didn’t give your all, the team gave their all. And a Spain showed up that had better fuel than us.”

Speculation about a supposed “conspiracy” had begun to circulate on social media and some media outlets, fueled by the Argentine team’s poor performance. However, if there really had been a fix for Argentina to lose, it would have been enough for Dibu Martínez not to save any of the many balls he stopped, and everyone would have gone home calmer, without having run so much. But the reality is different: Argentina played badly, with their own mistakes from the team’s formation to some stretches of the game, against a superior opponent.

The defeat hurts, but there are no mysteries. The team gave their all, but Spain was better. As Carlos Mac Allister said, in 20 years the truth will be known, like in Mexico with Codesal, but for now the only certainty is that Argentina deservedly lost. Messi’s pep talk was about football, not conspiracy. And the rumors are nothing more than that: unfounded rumors.
