The 2026 World Cup already has its first viral phenomenon in the stands. His name is Lumumba Vea, he is 49 years old and is the most emblematic fan of the Democratic Republic of Congo. His particular way of cheering —or rather, of not cheering— has all football fans wondering who this guy is who stands like a statue for 90 minutes. And watch out, because his team could face Argentina in the round of 32.

Lumumba Vea —whose real name is Michel Nkuka Mboladinga— dresses in formal colored suits, tie and glasses, and plants himself in a visible spot in the stadium. He doesn’t jump, shout, or sing. He doesn’t even react to goals. His right arm rises to the sky and stays there, firm, as if made of stone. The reason: he replicates the statue of Patrice Lumumba, the Congolese independence leader assassinated in 1961. A political tribute that started in 2013 and has already gone around the world.

But getting here wasn’t easy. Health authorities imposed a strict quarantine due to the Ebola outbreak in his country, forcing him to undergo isolation in a third country. Thus, he missed the debut of the Leopards, who drew 1-1 with Portugal. However, the fan is already in Guadalajara, and his presence promises to be a spectacle in itself.

Lumumba Vea’s fame exploded at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, when cameras captured him in Morocco. His figure is so respected that the squad itself asked the federation to include him as part of the official delegation. He even sparked controversy: Algeria’s Mohamed Amoura mocked him after an elimination, and the Algerian Federation had to issue a public apology.

Now, with his team still in the tournament, the potential clash with Argentina’s Scaloni-led side raises alarms. Can Argentina handle the mystique of this fan who defies Ebola, gravity, and any emotion? The truth is that Lumumba Vea is already part of this World Cup’s history, and his human statue promises to keep making headlines.
