Polémica mundial: jugadores argentinos mostraron bandera de Malvinas tras vencer a Inglaterra

The epic victory of the Argentine national team over England 2-1 in the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup not only secured a spot in the final but also sparked international controversy. As soon as the final whistle blew at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the Argentine players unfurled a white flag with black letters on the pitch that read: «Las Malvinas son argentinas.»

The message, driven by midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, broke the prior warning from U.S. authorities and FIFA, who had classified the match as «high risk.» In a meeting held last Monday in Virginia, a security operation with over 1,600 personnel was defined to prevent any political demonstrations. Argentine Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva had been clear: «Anyone entering with a message of political content or racial or religious provocation will not be allowed in. Las Malvinas son argentinas is a political message.»

However, neither threats nor controls managed to stop the players’ gesture. Once the flag appeared on the field, the stands filled with other banners bearing similar inscriptions, unleashing the fury of British media. The Sun portal headlined «Argentine arrogance» and called the banner «disgusting.» The Daily Mail, meanwhile, warned that FIFA could report the incident, as it had explicitly banned flags alluding to the Falkland Islands due to their political significance.

Far from apologizing, the footballers defended their stance. Leandro Paredes told Telefé: «And they will always be Argentine…» Lautaro Martínez, scorer of the second goal, added: «Obviously it’s something that happened many years ago, we try to leave it behind, but for us it wasn’t just another match, it was a special match.» Lisandro Martínez, initially evasive, finally stated: «We couldn’t let the Argentine people down.»

The echo also reached the local sphere. Omar De Felippe, coach and Falklands War veteran, published an emotional message on social media alongside a photo of the players with the flag: «There are matches that transcend football. As a Falklands veteran, today I just want to thank these boys for the enormous joy and immense caress to the soul they gave us.»

While FIFA evaluates possible sanctions, the gesture of the Argentine national team has already been etched as one of the most political and controversial moments in World Cup history. The Malvinas flag, banned but present, once again reminded the world that the cause remains alive.
