Basically, players put a sort of portable refrigerator around their bodies. “When a player puts on this vest with small gels, the heat from their body passes to the colder environment,” Franchela added. This allows the body to dissipate metabolic heat more quickly, which is essential when playing at the highest level in extreme climatic conditions.

“In medicine, we also have a test called the cold pressor test, which involves putting hands in ice water and seeing if the coronary arteries react. If it’s a test to check how our heart is, it wouldn’t be good for someone to do it intuitively,” he warned.
