La semilla que fortalece los músculos y el mito del helado que no refresca

Nutritionist Diego Sívori visited the LN+ studios to reveal which dry, edible seed promotes muscle mass strengthening. He also debunked the «three great myths» of summer foods and pointed out the alcoholic drink that causes the worst hangover.

Sívori, director of the Nutrition degree at UADE, began by demystifying rice: «Many say that, being a carbohydrate, it is very difficult to digest, when in reality it’s the opposite. There is nothing easier to digest than a plate of rice.» He added: «To get these results, it is better to eat white rice than brown rice. And what I say about rice also applies to pasta. Because in these two foods, the big problem is their companions: cheese, sauces, and cold cuts.»

Then, the specialist targeted three summer classics: «Three great myths are that ice cream, a beer, or a bag of chips refresh you. They are possibly the three most consumed things during summer, and all three cause heat.» Sívori explained: «Eating hot does not mean eating caloric. And eating cold does not mean low in calories. The prime example is ice cream: the body cannot fully utilize the calories. Of that ice cream, 70% turns into body heat, and the remaining 30% into energy. For all this, saying that eating ice cream refreshes is a myth.»

On French fries, he was emphatic: «It is without a doubt the most addictive food in the world. Because it combines carbohydrates, fats, and crunchiness. It activates the hedonic centers in the brain, which seek pleasure. Most likely, when opening a bag of chips, we eat the whole thing, which doesn’t happen with a bag of broccoli.»

Regarding alcohol, Sívori pointed out: «Without a doubt, the drinks that cause the most hangover are those that have some kind of coloring. At this time of year, the best example is aperitifs.» And he warned: «Caloric intake is a highway. If you put in a lot of excess with alcohol, later your body will demand a very large amount of energy. And everything left over goes to your abdominal fat reserves.» He compared beer and wine: «A glass of beer or a glass of wine have a very similar calorie level. The only difference is that beer makes you more bloated.»

Finally, he recommended seasonal fruits: «Melon and watermelon are highly sought after because they provide a great amount of water. Regarding sugar level, in a slice of watermelon it doesn’t even equal a candy. It gives you satiety, hydrates you, and provides fiber.» And he gave a tip: «Freeze grapes: leaving them in the freezer for a few hours gives us an unbeatable healthy snack.»
