The joy over the Argentine national team’s victory against Switzerland turned to mourning in Eldorado, Misiones. During Saturday’s celebrations, a violent traffic accident claimed the lives of two people, including a 16-year-old girl who was a national tennis prospect: Luisana Schönberger.
The young woman, who ranked fourth in the national under-10 rankings and third regionally in under-14, was traveling in a Volkswagen Gol driven by Renzo Retamozo, 20, who also died in the crash. Three other youths aged 16, 17, and 20 were in the vehicle. According to initial reconstructions, the Gol hit the rear of a Toyota Corolla at high speed, swerved, and crashed into a tree. Retamozo and Schönberger died at the scene or after being taken to hospital; the others were injured.
The Argentine Tennis Association issued a statement lamenting the loss: «From a very young age she stood out on the courts thanks to her talent and dedication.» The Eldorado Lawn Tennis club, where she took her first steps, considered her an «adopted daughter.» The school she attended, Instituto Superior San José, also expressed its grief and offered support to the family.
Authorities are investigating whether the youths were street racing. The Director of Traffic and Transportation of Eldorado, Fernando Caro, stated that security cameras show two vehicles traveling at high speed. «Apparently a third car also involved was hit from behind by one of the vehicles,» he explained. The Gol had an Argentine flag on the rear window, a symbol of the celebration that ended in tragedy.
The 16-year-old suffered fractures to the humerus and lumbar spine; she was taken to a private clinic where she died. The 17-year-old remains in intensive care on mechanical ventilation, while the 20-year-old was discharged this Monday but must continue with medical check-ups.
The crash occurred on San Martín Avenue at kilometer 10, amid celebrations for Argentina’s advance to the 2026 World Cup semifinals. The sports community and residents of Eldorado are in shock. Investigations continue, and a third vehicle has been seized to determine responsibility.
