The national government made official this Wednesday the appointment of Ana María Cristina Juan as federal judge of First Instance in Criminal and Correctional Matters of Hurlingham, Buenos Aires province. This is established by Decree 589/2026 published in the Official Gazette, ending a process that sparked controversy in the corridors of Comodoro Py.
Juan, who until now served as a legal secretary in the Federal Chamber, had to appear three times before the Senate Agreements Committee to obtain its approval. The seat she will occupy is a new court, created in 2015, and according to the magistrate herself during her Senate testimony, it is a jurisdiction marked by «drugs, data falsification, and some environmental controversies.»
But what drew the most attention in judicial circles is that Ana Juan is the wife of Marcelo Martínez de Giorgi, the federal judge of Comodoro Py who is handling the $LIBRA case, which investigates President Javier Milei. This fact did not go unnoticed by senators, who at the time questioned the impartiality of the appointment. However, the candidate managed to overcome the suspicions and received Congress’s approval.
In her presentation before the Agreements Committee, Juan highlighted the difficulties women face in accessing judicial positions. «These capacities that we women have to be organized – that’s why we are great secretaries and are always chosen as secretaries within the justice administration – and that work force that makes us return home and continue working, I would like to develop them in my task as a magistrate,» she stated.
With 34 years since graduating from the University of Buenos Aires and a PhD in Law from the University of Palermo, Juan began her career at the Federal Chamber of Comodoro Py in the 1990s. There she was an assistant, clerk, deputy secretary, and finally legal secretary, a position she held for over a decade. Her extensive career allowed her to earn, unanimously, first place in the order of merit prepared by the Council of the Judiciary.
In the courts, she is described as a woman of «direct» and «efficient» style, with a personality that leaves her in «ample» conditions to take charge of the Federal Court of Hurlingham. Despite being a specialist in criminal law and a doctor, it is not her theoretical prowess that draws praise, but her «craft» and her ability to resolve cases expeditiously.
The appointment of Ana Juan adds to a series of movements in the Judiciary that generate controversy, especially due to family ties between judges who investigate political power. Meanwhile, in Hurlingham, complex cases await her, ranging from drug trafficking to environmental crimes, in a court that is just beginning to operate.

¡Basuras!
