A political scandal of proportions shakes the run-up to the hottest match of the World Cup: the Argentine national team faces England in the semifinals, but Javier Milei’s government decided to endorse the ban on entering flags or shirts alluding to the Malvinas Islands at the Atlanta stadium. The measure was confirmed by Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva after a summit at the International Center for Police Cooperation in Virginia, where the FBI, FIFA, and British authorities participated. There, the match was classified as “high risk” and an operation of 1,600 officers was arranged.
The libertarian official framed the symbols of the archipelago within the “political or provocative messages” banned by FIFA, which unleashed the fury of the opposition. Kirchnerism, Radicalism, and other sectors of Peronism came out with harsh criticism.
Buenos Aires legislator for Unión por la Patria and La Cámpora activist Paula Penacca exploded on social media: “Banning the entry of the Malvinas flag is banning the entry of the Argentine flag. The only provocateurs are the sellouts of this government who deny sovereignty and the kids who gave their lives. The Malvinas were, are, and will be Argentine.”
Radical deputy Pablo Juliano went further: he accused the cabinet of being “fans of Margaret Thatcher” and stated: “It is crystal clear that those who should be demanded to defend the light blue and white are these officials of the day.” On his X account, he added: “Since 1833 we have had an uninterrupted claim for the Malvinas, and officials travel to Atlanta to negotiate that we not be ‘provocative’ by defending what is ours. They are pathetic!”
Córdoba deputy Natalia De la Sota argued that the government intends to impose on Argentines the way to “feel and express” love for the homeland. “Defending sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands is not a crime: it is a mandate of the National Constitution,” she said. And she concluded: “Let us not let them extinguish our passion, lower our flags, or silence us. There are causes that are defended with pride, respect, and conviction.”
Her colleague Gabriela Estévez also joined in: “It is not fake, it is not a rumor, the Security Minister herself confirmed it. It is a shame that a minister of our country accepts such conditions. They disrespect our sovereignty and our flag every day.”
Former Lavagnista deputy Alejandro ‘Topo’ Rodríguez called Monteoliva “anti-national” and demanded her resignation: “With complete naturalness, she informs the Argentine people not to use ‘the little map’ of the Malvinas because it is ‘political content.’ The Malvinas are Argentine, and this lady should resign now.”
From the left, Gabriel Solano (Partido Obrero) stated that “it is repudiable that the minister informs that Argentines will not be able to enter tomorrow’s match with flags ‘with provocative political content’ alluding to the Malvinas Islands.”
Socialist deputy Esteban Paulón wondered: “What would happen if someone goes to the stadium tomorrow with a T-shirt that has the map of Argentina? It would be impossible for that map not to include the Malvinas. Would they also censor that T-shirt?” He also presented a repudiation bill: “We repudiate Minister Monteoliva’s endorsement of the ban on making visible the Argentine sovereignty claim over the Malvinas in the Argentina-England match. Sovereignty over the Malvinas is not a ‘political message,’ it is an irrevocable constitutional mandate.”
Monteoliva, for her part, defended the measure: “FIFA prioritizes the integration of spectators, but considering the volume of fans, it was agreed that Argentines will enter through gate 4 and the English through gate 3, although they will later share common areas.” The match will be played at Atlanta Stadium, one of the most luxurious in the United States, and since Tuesday security has been reinforced at hotels and transfers of the delegations.
