Diplomatic Chainsaw: Milei Fires Official After Fierce Internal Conflict at Embassy in Spain

Motosierra diplomática: Milei echó a un funcionario tras una feroz interna en la Embajada en España

Javier Milei’s government decided to apply its famous ‘chainsaw’ to one of its most fervent ‘warriors of the cultural battle’. Alejandro Nimo, who until recently served as Specialized Attaché for investments at the Argentine Embassy in Spain, was removed from his position by Decree 588/2026, following a series of incidents that show that, in the diplomacy of the ‘heavenly force’, loyalty does not always guarantee job permanence.

The conflict, which escalated from diplomatic hallways to social media, reached its boiling point when Nimo publicly complained in April that Ambassador Wenceslao Bunge Saravia had taken away his office at the headquarters on Fernando El Santo Street, in the exclusive Salamanca neighborhood. After being displaced from his office, the diplomat took his resentment to the social network X, where he tried to turn a matter of square meters into an ideological affront.

According to the former official, the office was not simply a workplace, but had ‘become a symbol and a meeting place’ for followers of Milei’s ideas in Madrid. In a burst of mysticism, he went so far as to say: ‘Getting rid of my office was not getting rid of me. It was getting rid of a symbol.’ There was no lack of mention of the portrait of the President that adorned the place and suspicions that his presence bothered what he calls the ‘diplomatic caste’.

However, from the Embassy the explanation was much more down-to-earth: the structure was reduced simply because the lease for one of the building’s floors was not renewed, forcing a redistribution of staff. But beyond the formal reasons, the situation exposed a fierce internal conflict. While Bunge Saravia, a man from the world of international finance, sought a technical and centralized management, Nimo operated with his own agenda, promising railway and food investments worth 2.5 billion euros in parallel to the embassy.

That confrontation escalated further with an interview given to an influencer, in which Nimo, blurring the limits of his role, launched harsh criticisms against the government of Pedro Sánchez. At the Casa Rosada, they interpreted that these statements exceeded his authority and aggravated a bilateral relationship that was already going through a tense moment. That episode sealed his departure from the Argentine representation in Madrid.

Finally, the government decided to ‘clip Nimo’s wings’ through a decree that resolved the dispute in favor of Bunge. The measure was taken under the argument that diplomatic efficiency requires action ‘in accordance with the guidelines, directives and instructions issued by the National State’.

Despite having been removed from his position, according to reports, the former Specialized Attaché for investments at the Argentine Embassy in Spain had already rented an office in the Chamberí neighborhood to continue working on his own. Now, with his expulsion from Argentine diplomacy, it remains to be seen whether he will nonetheless continue to defend ‘the ideas of freedom’ on Spanish soil.
