Europe is in flames. A relentless heatwave, with temperatures already exceeding 40 degrees, has unleashed a nightmare of fire in three southern European countries. France, Spain and Portugal burn without respite, and firefighters race against time to contain an advance that has already devoured thousands of hectares and left a trail of injuries.
In Spain, the epicenter of the disaster is in Catalonia, near the touristy Costa Brava. There, the flames have already consumed 2,200 hectares. Firefighters managed to stabilize the perimeter in La Bisbal d’Empordà, but the danger has not passed: several internal vegetation islands threaten to reignite the blaze. Regional president Salvador Illa confirmed the arrest of a suspect for alleged negligence in the origin of the fire. Meanwhile, the fire continues its unstoppable march.
France is not far behind. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez issued a chilling warning: the summer wildfire season has arrived a month early. Some 700 firefighters work tirelessly on the outskirts of Perpignan, specifically in Trévillach, where the fire has ravaged 1,600 hectares. The toll: two people seriously injured, hospitalized in critical condition. The flames, fueled by extreme heat and dry terrain, show no mercy.
But the most devastating picture is in Portugal. Civil Protection reported that the flames have already devoured at least 13,000 hectares in the northern part of the country. The fire’s advance covers a 35-kilometer front, according to duty officer José Costa. Nine injured, some with severe burns, is the provisional toll of an emergency that overwhelms local resources. Given the severity of the situation, Spain and Italy have sent aircraft and reinforcement contingents to help contain the inferno.
And while southern Europe suffocates amid flames and smoke, Greece also suffers. Near Thessaloniki, the country’s second most populous city, firefighters battle a complex fire that affected a recycling plant and an industrial oil processing facility. The result: dense columns of black smoke and a strong smell of burnt plastic cover the metropolitan area, causing panic among residents.
The European Union is on maximum alert. The speed of the fire’s spread, driven by the heatwave and extreme dryness, has set off all alarms. Experts warn that this could be one of the worst wildfire seasons in years, and regional governments are already requesting international aid. Meanwhile, firefighters remain on the front line, risking their lives to save forests, towns, and people.
The heat gives no respite, and neither does the fire. Europe burns, and the question hanging in the air is: how much longer can we hold out?

Firmado: El Gaucho
