Everything exploded in the Persian Gulf. Iran launched a volley of missiles at a US military base in Bahrain and at two oil tankers from the United Arab Emirates sailing through the Strait of Hormuz. The toll: one sailor dead and at least eight wounded. The Iranian offensive came in response to a wave of bombings ordered by Washington, which had already announced a new assault on the Persian country on Sunday.
The headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet, located in Bahrain, was the main target. Iranian media confirmed the attack, while the Revolutionary Guard claimed responsibility for the strikes on the vessels Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, both linked to the UAE. «They ignored repeated warnings. They chose to cross a mined area and were attacked and disabled,» Tehran stated.
The UAE Ministry of Defense did not remain silent. It called the attack «blatant» and condemned it as «a dangerous escalation and a cowardly act that threatens the safety of civilians.» In a statement, they confirmed the death of a civilian of Asian nationality and assured that their air defense systems intercepted several missiles with «high efficiency.» Despite the chaos, they said the security situation in the country remains stable.
On the other side, the US Central Command (Centcom) reported that it completed a wave of attacks against Iran that lasted five hours. The bombings targeted military objectives in Bushehr, Chah Bahar, Jask, Konarak, Abu Musa, and Bandar Abbas. «We employed precision munitions against Iranian coastal defense systems, missile and drone bases, and their maritime capabilities,» they detailed. The goal: to weaken Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping.
Hours earlier, President Donald Trump announced on his social media that «we are reestablishing» a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. In a message on Truth Social, he wrote: «The Strait of Hormuz is OPEN and will remain so, with or without Iran.» But immediately afterward, he threatened to impose a toll of 20% of the total cargo transported on ships he does allow through, while blocking only Iranian vessels. A brutal shift in US policy, which until now defended free navigation without tolls.
The dispute over control of the Strait of Hormuz — through which a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas passes — escalated to levels of open war. Any attempt to charge fees would violate global norms on freedom of navigation and could trigger a regional economic crisis. Meanwhile, Trump doubled down: «We are hitting them very hard. And it will continue, and we’ll see what happens.»
