A 36-year-old man was arrested on Friday in central Edinburgh after attacking five Muslim immigrants with a machete, in an incident that police are investigating as a hate crime.
According to authorities, the attack began near a mosque in the west of the Scottish capital and continued in the Leith Walk area. The victims — two men aged 22 and others aged 24, 27, and 39 — were treated at the scene and none suffered serious injuries. The attacker, a Scottish citizen, was subdued by counter-terrorism police.
Upon arrest, the man shouted slogans against the Muslim community: he claimed he was «protecting the country» and hurled insults accusing immigrants of abusing minors. The prosecutor’s office is analyzing these statements as an aggravating factor of religious and racial hatred.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the attack «absolutely outrageous» and said the perpetrator will face «the full weight of the law.» Security forces have increased protection around the mosque and called for calm in the local community.
The suspect remains in custody pending formal charges. The investigation is ongoing to determine whether he acted alone and how he planned the attack.
