The case of the rubber bullet attack that nearly cost photojournalist Pablo Grillo his life has added a scandalous chapter. The Ministry of Security, led by Patricia Bullrich and now also Alejandra Monteoliva, allegedly concealed the radio communications from the exact moment when Corporal Guerrero shot the press photographer. This was denounced by the prosecution, which requested an investigation into the entire chain of command.
On July 13, the transcript of the federal forces’ radio communications during the operation of March 12, 2025, was added to the case file. The records cover eleven and a half hours, from 12:00 PM to 11:34 PM. However, there is a black hole: between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM there is not a single line. Exactly the period when Pablo Grillo was hit by the tear gas projectile fired by gendarme Guerrero.
«This is not an administrative error; it is an intentional omission,» the prosecution argues. Videos from the area show Federal Police Inspector Commissioner Gerardo Ariel Perillo Scampini alongside the line of gendarmes where Guerrero was, communicating via radio during that same time. That evidence, key to determining responsibility, was deleted from the official record.
This is not the first time Gendarmerie and the Ministry of Security have played hide-and-seek with evidence. In the early months, the force delayed handing over footage from other officers who were near Guerrero when he fired. They only sent one video, and when the court insisted, they argued that one camera was not working and another was turned off. They also refused to present the internal investigation against the corporal, which led to a raid on the Centinela Building. There, they discovered that the administrative inquiry was stalled and that, moreover, they were trying to blame the victim.
For Grillo’s lawyers, this is nothing more than a chain of cover-ups that starts with Guerrero himself but goes up to Patricia Bullrich and current Minister Monteoliva, who was deputy minister at the time of the attack. «It is not enough to convict the murderer Guerrero. The entire chain of command must be summoned, prosecuted, tried, and convicted,» they assert.
This modus operandi recalls other tragic cases in recent history, such as the disappearance of Santiago Maldonado, the death of Rafael Nahuel, or the murder of Fernando Gómez, the latter occurring just after the La Libertad Avanza government took office in December 2023. Always the same pattern: denial, delay, concealment, and ultimately impunity.
Meanwhile, Guerrero has already been indicted and is close to trial for attempted homicide. But the question hanging in the air is who else should sit in the dock. The prosecution has already requested that Bullrich and Monteoliva be summoned for questioning and that the Gendarmerie superiors and civilian officials of the Ministry of Security be investigated. The ball is in the judge’s court.
