The mystery surrounding the disappearance of five Argentine fishermen in the Río de la Plata adds a new chilling chapter. The Uruguayan Coast Guard found a lifeless body on the coast of Atlántida, Canelones department, and local authorities are already investigating whether it is one of the victims of the tragedy that has kept the entire country on edge.
According to initial reports, the corpse showed no external injuries consistent with third-party intervention. This reinforces the hypothesis that the body was dragged by currents and strong winds that have battered the estuary in recent days. The Atlántida Prosecutor’s Office immediately ordered forensic tests to determine the cause of death and, above all, to confirm the victim’s identity. That result will be key to knowing whether we are facing the third deceased fisherman.
So far, the bodies of Sebastián Romegialli, 50, and Carlos Kovach have been identified. Romegialli appeared on June 26 about 60 kilometers off the coast of Atalaya, near the border with Uruguay, after a merchant ship alerted the Uruguayan Navy. Two days later, on June 28, a search operation found Kovach’s body in the waters of the Río de la Plata, off Punta Indio. If the tests confirm that the new discovery corresponds to another member of the group, three fatalities will have been identified and two fishermen will still be missing.
The five men set out on the morning of June 14 from Camping Hudson in Berazategui, hoping for a day of pejerrey fishing. The last communication with the vessel ‘Chamigo-Ho’ was recorded between 6 and 8:30 a.m. that day. When they failed to return, their families reported them missing, and a search operation was deployed spanning from Hudson to the coasts of Berisso, Ensenada, and Magdalena, and even Uruguayan waters.
The vessel was equipped with life jackets, flares, GPS, and VHF radio, but according to reports, it did not have an emergency beacon or electronic positioning system, devices that could have facilitated its location during the emergency. Specialists maintain that strong currents and adverse weather conditions may have pushed the boat to a different area than planned, triggering the tragedy.
While anxiously awaiting the results of the tests in Uruguay, search operations continue to try to locate the two fishermen who remain missing. The community of Berazategui and the entire country await answers, as the Río de la Plata continues to return, one by one, the bodies of those who went fishing and never came back.
