They did me enormous harm, I will never see my daughter again.» With those heartbreaking words, Melisa Heredia, mother of Agostina Vega, broke her silence after the discovery of the teenager’s remains in Córdoba and demanded justice with a contained fury that shook everyone.
In her first interview after being discharged from the hospital — she had been admitted for a breakdown following the femicide — Heredia directly targeted Claudio Barrelier, the main suspect in the crime. «I am satisfied with what the prosecutor has done, but I cannot sleep with everything that happened,» she said in a conversation with a national media outlet, as the case continues to add chilling chapters.
The woman revealed a shocking detail: both she and her circle knew that Barrelier had a prior complaint of violence against another woman, but the accused himself had brainwashed them. «We all thought he was innocent; he told us it was a political setup and we believed that,» confessed Heredia, visibly distressed. «I knew Barrelier and thought he was my friend and that he would never harm my daughter,» she added.
But the mother’s anger does not stop there. Heredia also harshly criticized police actions during the first hours of Agostina’s disappearance. According to her account, suspicions about Barrelier arose immediately. «When the taxi driver called me and told me he had dropped her off at Barrelier’s house, I began to suspect him. I gave his name and surname, the address, and they did not move quickly. Not even when I filed the complaint; they kept me waiting from four to nine in the morning to take it,» she denounced.
Heredia also targeted the accused’s inner circle. «I believe there are more people involved. All of Barrelier’s circle is involved; I want them all in prison,» she stated. Along those lines, she mentioned Soledad Andreani, owner of the Ford Ka seized in the investigation, and Osvaldo Fassetta, a friend of the main suspect who is also detained. «He was on the phone the whole time while we were searching for my daughter. I think he was tipping off Barrelier,» she asserted.
The case, which already has Barrelier, Fassetta, and Andreani in pretrial detention for various crimes related to the murder and alleged cover-up, added Heredia as a plaintiff. But for the mother, the fight is just beginning. «My life now is my son; I have to go on for him; I cannot stay crying in bed. I will mourn my daughter for the rest of my life,» she expressed.
The pain becomes crueler when she remembers that Agostina was about to turn 15 in July. «We had already organized her party; she had already chosen her dress. It is very painful,» she lamented. And with a broken voice, she described her daughter as «the spark of the family» and pleaded: «As I always told them, don’t leave me alone.»
