Buenos Aires City Chief of Government Jorge Macri and President Javier Milei exchanged a friendly embrace during the Te Deum at the Buenos Aires Cathedral on July 9, a gesture that contrasts with the «ole» Milei had dedicated to him the previous year. This public rapprochement fuels rumors of a possible far-right alliance ahead of the 2027 elections, as Macri seeks reelection in the city.
The 2025 electoral campaign, which started early with the split of Buenos Aires elections, found Macri and Milei fiercely competing. However, the libertarian victory weakened the PRO in its main stronghold. Macri responded by copying Milei’s fascist-style approach: he cracked down on the poor, street vendors, and unions, and communicated everything with a cinematic tone. But the results are the same: in the country’s richest city, poverty and indigence increased, as did labor informality.
A year later, La Libertad Avanza has no strong candidates in the city. With Manuel Adorni leaving after his rapid enrichment was revealed, and Patricia Bullrich showing signs of abandoning the libertarian ship to run for president, Macri aspires to reelection with Milei’s support. The gestures were not long in coming: at the end of May, Luis Caputo arranged the delivery of bonds and Treasury notes to settle a co-participation debt with the city, and progress was also made on the transfer of Labor Justice, a measure celebrated by the business community to shield the Labor Reform.
Meanwhile, the Buenos Aires legislature is practically paralyzed: only three sessions have been held so far this year. The far-right internal conflict tightened with the arrangement of the 2025 election, but when it comes to favoring businessmen, such as with the Buenos Aires RIGI, everyone raises their hand, including former Juntos por el Cambio members. Peronism, being the largest bloc, does not gravitate: its vehement speeches in the chamber are its only political activity. It is paralyzed by the internal dispute between La Cámpora and the Kicillof faction, and by different ties with the PRO. Juan Manuel Olmos, head of Buenos Aires Peronism, let rumors circulate about a possible alliance with Larreta’s faction and the Radicals for 2027, but nothing is set.
Below, on the left, something is emerging. More than 1,500 people are already organizing in committees for a new working-class party promoted by Myriam Bregman. In the unions, the UTE leadership turns its back on workers, negotiating and then verbally rejecting the BA Aprende reform, while union opposition grows: the combative list promoted by the April 9 group won in the Socioeducational Program Early Childhood, unifying delegates toward UTE and Ademys. Anger seeps through the cracks: Yrurtia students halted the implementation of BA Aprende with a takeover, Lugano residents protest against Edesur, and the Coordinator against Evictions and for Housing strengthens in the face of Macri’s eviction campaign. The women’s movement also resurfaces, with the Left Community and Bread and Roses supporting the fight for the reinstatement of Araceli Pintos, fired from Emova after being harassed by a police officer.
Everything remains to be seen, but while the far right embraces, resistance grows from below.
