The Adorni labyrinth has no way out. Or maybe it does, but the government wants to shield it with pure regulations. In a move that reeks of desperation, the ruling party requested a meeting of bloc leaders in the Senate for this Tuesday, with the intention of discussing the necessary conditions to enable debate on a request for interpellation against Chief of Cabinet Manuel Adorni. The session is scheduled for Thursday, but the fight is over the fine print of majorities.
First, the head of the La Libertad Avanza bloc, Patricia Bullrich, accepted that the motion could be handled with an absolute majority. But then she backtracked and now demands a two-thirds vote of those present. The argument? That the resolution project presented by Kirchnerism does not have a committee opinion and, therefore, should be discussed on the floor. A move that the opposition describes as an attempt to block debate and protect a questioned official.
Meanwhile, the Adorni scandal shows no respite. On Saturday, at the Flag Day event in Rosario, the intended photo was to show support from Milei, his sister Karina, and the Cabinet for the Chief of Cabinet. But Vice President Victoria Villarruel, with her defiant attendance, made clear her ethical questioning of the government she belongs to without belonging. The libertarian internal strife dances to the Adorni beat.
But not everything is Adorni. In parallel, the Public Prosecutor’s Office requested prison sentences of between three and five years for four former Navy officers for the sinking of the submarine ARA San Juan, which cost the lives of 44 crew members in 2017. The accusation targets Rear Admiral Luis Enrique López Mazzeo, Captain Claudio Javier Villamide, Captain Héctor Aníbal Alonso, and Frigate Captain Hugo Miguel Correa. A case overshadowed by political noise.
And while the government tries to cover up one scandal, another emerges from the south. Federal Judge Luis Armella summoned Jesica Cirio to hand over her cell phone, which contains videos showing her in a dressing room full of heat-sealed stacks of dollars. Investigators estimate they could total around 10 million dollars. Cirio is being investigated as an alleged participant in the illicit enrichment of her ex-husband, Martín Insaurralde, who remains in political ostracism but retains his power in the Buenos Aires Legislature, gambling, and the municipality of Lomas de Zamora.
In another move, the government announced Fabián Fernández as the new Secretary of Communication and Press, replacing Javier Lanari. Fernández, a specialist in political communication, previously served as Media Manager at YPF. The change adds to the removal of Manuel Adorni from the spokesperson role, now held by Deputy Adrián Ravier. Ravier has already met with Adorni at the Casa Rosada to coordinate his incorporation, which could be with the rank of minister or secretary, under the orders of Karina Milei.
The shield around Adorni is total. But the question is how long it will hold.
