Daniel López Rosetti: “El lado oscuro se puede trabajar, la competencia es con uno mismo”

Cardiologist Daniel López Rosetti once again hit the nail on the head regarding mental health and daily stress. In an interview, the specialist referred to the “bad or dark side” of human beings and the opportunity to change that perception. “What you have that is bad – because we all have a dark side – you have the opportunity to work on it, to change your perception; your perception of reality, of emotionality, apply what Jigorō Kanō said: ‘You should not be better than others, but better than yesterday.’ Competition, in the good sense, is with oneself and not with others,” he noted.

Along the same lines, the cardiologist emphasized that many of the things that stress us today should not do so. “What stresses you today probably should not stress you. And the approach to that reality so that it does not stress you surely has more to do with a life philosophy than with an anxiolytic,” he stated.

Rosetti also highlighted the value of physical exercise as a fundamental therapeutic tool for mental health. According to the professional, movement has positive effects on the brain, but they are not immediate: “Between one and two months. Published studies show that the benefit is not immediate but is almost immediate for someone with depression; benefits are noticeable between four and eight weeks.” The specialist compared exercise modalities and stated that both aerobic activities and strength training provide equivalent advantages for the psyche.

“Published studies talk about aerobic physical activity – that is, walking, brisk walking, jogging, and weights – that is, resistance exercise; strength training has the same effect as aerobic physical exercise in terms of treating depression,” he explained. The recommended dose, according to the World Health Organization, is 150 minutes of brisk walking per week. “If you walk briskly, non-stop, 30 minutes, 5 times a week, that is a sufficient dose,” he detailed. He also stressed the importance of maintaining muscle tone: “It is always good to do strength training physical activity to increase muscle tone. That would be the dose of medication.”

The cardiologist also differentiated between clinical depression and a depressed mood due to stress or daily frustrations. “It is true that in the days we live in, a depressed mood due to frustrations, emotional life experiences, stress itself, whose symptomatic manifestation is often sadness, listlessness, the inability to smile, the inability to enjoy, a dulled or numbed mood, is increasingly common,” he indicated. In these cases, physical activity has much faster effects than in clinical depression. “A person with a depressed mood – and I want to separate this from a stable and diagnosed clinical depression, which is a disease – but emotionality or a depressed mood is extremely common; well, even in a depressed mood, physical activity improves the person in a few days. Movement is a medicine,” he concluded.

Hipócrita, me parece.
