Explosive rift at the top: Villarruel clashed with Milei in Tucumán and fired at his 'shutdown' plan

The vice president again distanced herself from the president during the July 9 events. She accused him of making a 'very political' speech and criticized the project to shut down the state inspired by the United States.

Explosiva grieta en la cúpula: Villarruel chocó con Milei en Tucumán y disparó contra su plan de 'shutdown'

The rift at the top of power widened this Tuesday in Tucumán. Victoria Villarruel, Vice President of the Nation, again crossed President Javier Milei during the events for the 210th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, in a day that exposed the deep differences separating the two leaders.

After participating in the vigil and the official ceremony at the Historic House, Villarruel did not hold back with the press: she described Milei’s speech as «very political» and demanded that the national holiday should be a moment of unity for all Argentines. «Today we commemorate a date that transcends all political spaces. Today we commemorate the moment when there is nothing better for an Argentine than another Argentine,» the Senate president fired, in a clear message of differentiation.

But the clash did not end there. In an opinion column published in the Tucumán newspaper La Gaceta, Villarruel went much further and harshly questioned the «shutdown» project promoted by the government, an initiative inspired by the American model that proposes limiting the functioning of the state when budget resources run out. «We can hardly speak of true freedom if our legislative agenda is limited to subordinating the design of our legal framework to foreign regulations or interests,» the vice president wrote, in a direct critique of the heart of the libertarian agenda.

In the same text, Villarruel defended national sovereignty over strategic resources and argued that the country’s wealth should be oriented toward federal development, industrialization, and economic growth. A stance that clashes head-on with Milei’s vision, which advocates for total deregulation and unlimited openness.

The vice president also indirectly responded to the concept of «second independence» that the President put forward in his speech. «Today, in the 21st century, Argentina faces a historic crossroads that, under new geopolitical, technological, and financial guises, reissues the same political dilemma of 1816. Freedom is not an abstraction; it is embodied in the concrete sovereignty of the Nation over its decisions and its resources,» she stated, in a warning that sounds like a declaration of her own principles.

Asked about a possible presidential candidacy in 2027, Villarruel avoided confirmation but left the door open: «I would like to be the person who serves Argentines with decency, honesty, and deep patriotism. With that, I am already set.»

Despite the differences exposed during the day, both leaders concluded their interventions with the same expression: «Long live the Homeland!» But the messages made it clear that behind the formula, there are two irreconcilable visions for the country’s direction. The rift is not only in the opposition: it now also divides the top of power.
