In a move that shook the Casa Rosada, Javier Milei formalized Diego Santilli as new Chief of Cabinet, replacing Manuel Adorni. But far from lowering the tone, the President doubled down: he said he still trusts the innocence of the former spokesperson and went all out against journalism. ‘Is there a sentence? You cannot condemn an innocent man,’ he fired in an interview with LN+.
According to Milei, Adorni’s departure had nothing to do with the judicial investigation or a possible interpellation. ‘Manuel considered that the levels of attack he was receiving were unacceptable. His children and his wife were also subjected to aggression. That made him directly say that his resignation was non-negotiable,’ he explained. And he added: ‘He is not convicted. There is an investigation process.’
The President denied that Adorni’s continued presence was harmful to the ruling party. ‘I do not share that in the slightest. In the criteria of my new book, which will soon be released and is called «Morality as State Policy,» I emphasized that you cannot sacrifice justice on the altar of efficiency. Condemning an innocent person is unjust,’ he insisted.
Furthermore, Milei renewed his attacks on the media: ‘That what an official says does not coincide with what journalism says does not mean that is lying. The one who usually lies is journalism. We are tired of seeing how they edit responses, how they adjust them.’ And he concluded: ‘Manuel is already out. If the Justice system proves he is innocent, it will show how badly and horribly the media work.’
Regarding the choice of Santilli, Milei explained that it is ‘a move equivalent to what we did at the time with Guillermo Francos.’ ‘What we are going to do now again is merge the Ministry of the Interior with the Chief of Cabinet. Much of the work has to do with the relationship with governors. That requires political muscle,’ he detailed. And he praised Santilli: ‘He is a great worker, who knows the trade. I think it will be a way to give air to everything we have to do.’
The President also revealed that he noticed ‘a deterioration in Manuel’s mood’ and that they therefore had three alternatives prepared. ‘Of those three, we thought the most suitable to resolve this situation was Diego Santilli. We had the experience of how well it worked with Francos. It is the same decision-making criterion,’ he stated.
Asked about the statements of Mauricio Macri and other political figures, Milei highlighted: ‘I find the responses from the political spectrum regarding Diego’s arrival interesting. The work he did from the Interior portfolio was extraordinary. It greatly facilitated things in Congress.’
Finally, regarding the possibility of future ‘Adorni cases’ or ‘Espert cases,’ Milei concluded: ‘On the other side is evil. They can do any kind of atrocity. The issue is whether one buys into it or not. Some of these cases occurred three weeks before an election. Mud sells. We trust that I am the first politician in Argentine history to have kept what he promised.’
