Milei leads ceremony for 32nd anniversary of AMIA bombing: 'A cowardly and criminal act'

President Javier Milei will participate this Friday in the commemoration of the 32nd anniversary of the AMIA bombing, brought forward due to Shabbat. Under the slogan 'Today we cannot lose memory,' the event is expected to be filled with calls for justice amid the impunity that still surrounds the case.

Milei encabeza el acto por los 32 años del atentado a la AMIA: "Un acto cobarde y criminal"

This Friday, President Javier Milei will attend the central ceremony for the 32nd anniversary of the terrorist attack against the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA), which occurred on July 18, 1994. The event is set for 9:45 AM at Pasteur 633, in the Once neighborhood, in front of the rebuilt headquarters of the Jewish mutual. The attack, which left 85 dead and more than 300 injured, is considered by Argentine justice as a crime against humanity and is not subject to statute of limitations.

Since the exact anniversary date falls this year on Shabbat, AMIA, DAIA, and the group Relatives of the Victims decided to move the commemoration to Friday, July 17, out of respect for religious observance. The formal ceremony will begin promptly at 9:53 AM with the sound of a siren, evoking the exact minute of the explosion.

In previous statements, Milei emphasized the historical weight of the event: ‘Buenos Aires is the city that hosts the largest Jewish community in Latin America, a source of pride and great responsibility. It is the city that has suffered two attacks by anti-Semitic terrorism. In 1992 and 1994, they claimed a total of 114 lives. A cowardly and criminal act that constitutes an indelible mark on our history and drives us every day to seek justice for the victims.’

32 years after the massacre, the judicial case still has no convictions. This void fuels the persistent demand for memory, truth, and justice that beats in civil society. To keep the denunciation against impunity alive, this year’s commemoration includes various artistic and cultural interventions promoted by the National Secretariat of Culture and the mutual.

Among the initiatives, the inauguration of ‘Pasteur 9.52’ stands out, a 5 x 8 meter mural designed by visual artist Lucas Lasnier (Parbo) on the facade of the rebuilt site. The work recreates the historic building as it looked exactly one minute before the explosion and incorporates two original stones from the destroyed building.

Also presented will be the institutional video of AMIA, under the same slogan this year, directed by Lucas Fossati and with the voice of actor Federico D’Elía. The clip reworks the popular World Cup song ‘Muchachos’ to reflect on the truncated life projects of the 85 victims. Another proposal is the play ‘The Empty Chair,’ written by Sol Levinton and narrated by Ricardo Darín, which recounts in the first person the experiences of four relatives and survivors of the tragic event.

Milei’s presence at the ceremony is not coincidental. The president seeks to show his commitment to the Jewish community and the fight against anti-Semitism, in a context where the case remains open and impunity hurts. The relatives of the victims hope that this commemoration will serve to keep memory alive and pressure for justice.
