This Monday, President Javier Milei will kick off one of the most ambitious reforms of his administration: the modification of the Organic Charter of the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA). The president will receive senators and national deputies of La Libertad Avanza (LLA) in the Heroes of Malvinas Hall of the Casa Rosada, starting at 3:00 PM, to outline the details of the text he will send to Congress and agree on the parliamentary strategy to allow its processing.
The meeting will be attended by the legislative team that reports to the General Secretary of the Presidency, Karina Milei, along with Chief of Staff Diego Santilli; Deputy Chief of Staff Ignacio Devitt; and Eduardo «Lule» Menem, among other officials. The BCRA reform is a priority for the government, which seeks to eliminate what it considers a «nonsense» inherited from Kirchnerism: an organic charter that, according to Milei, «is designed so that you go through the BCRA, raise your hand, and they throw a wad of money at you.»
The project, on which BCRA head Santiago Bausili and ministers Luis Caputo (Economy) and Federico Sturzenegger (Deregulation and State Transformation) are working, aims to redefine the role of the institution. Milei questioned that «the Central Bank has an instrument called monetary policy. You cannot ask it for five objectives. It is a declaration of ignorance.» The reform seeks to limit the BCRA’s functions to prevent it from becoming a machine for issuing money without control.
The official agenda for Monday will start early: at 11:00 AM, Santilli will receive the governor of San Luis, Claudio Poggi, also at Casa Rosada. The new Chief of Staff seeks to gather provincial support for LLA initiatives, among which the electoral reform stands out. In the afternoon, the focus will be on the meeting with official lawmakers, where Milei is expected to provide details on the project’s content and the timelines for its processing.
On Tuesday, the reformist operation will continue with a new meeting of the Government’s Political Table, although times and participants have not yet been confirmed. That same day at 11:00 AM, presidential spokesperson Adrián Ravier will hold his usual press conference. On Thursday, Karina Milei will lead a meeting with libertarian lawmakers from the City and province of Buenos Aires, while at 7:00 PM, Milei will participate in the event for the anniversary of the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange.
The reform of the BCRA Organic Charter is one of the strongest flags of Milei’s movement, which promises to put an end to the «uncontrolled issuance» that, according to their claims, characterized previous governments. With this move, the President seeks to send a clear signal to the market and investors that his administration is serious about monetary adjustment. The opposition has already anticipated resistance, but the ruling party is confident it has the necessary votes to push its project through Congress.
