In the midst of a storm of definitions, Javier Milei is intervening in everything. While he advances with the reform of the Central Bank Charter to restore its role of defending the value of the currency, the new Chief of Staff, Diego Santilli, has already started with a controller appointed by Karina Milei herself. The chosen one is Ignacio Devitt, a former official of Vicente López and the City of Buenos Aires who reports to Manuel Adorni. A delegate of Miss Milei in the universe of «Colo.»
But that is not the only thing stirring the waters. Federal Judge Diego Amarante, the same one who indicted the president of the AFA, Claudio «Chiqui» Tapia, and treasurer Pablo Toviggino for tax appropriation, has now taken over the case of the Pilar estate. It is five hectares valued at 25 million dollars that are supposedly in the name of Toviggino’s front men. Amarante rejected the request of prosecutor Pablo Turano and sent a letter to Judge Verónica Straccia to keep the case. His argument: the tax crimes he is investigating are «more serious» than money laundering and his case is much more advanced.
Meanwhile, Vice President Victoria Villarruel received railway unionist Rubén «Pollo» Sobrero in the Senate, who raised the calamitous state of the trains. «I thought she was very concerned,» said Sobrero, who warned: «This is not a matter of political differences; it is about wanting to avoid having another massacre like the one at Once.»
On the other hand, the Chief of Staff sent Congress a progress report on the budget for next year. Without specific figures, it confirms that economic policy will continue to focus on fiscal balance, reducing inflation, and maintaining the surplus. It also anticipates that priority will be given to investment projects already underway and those linked to job creation, exports, energy, technological development, and external financing.
The BCRA reform project began to take shape this Tuesday, when Milei confirmed to deputies and senators of La Libertad Avanza that he is working with Economy Minister Luis Caputo, BCRA President Santiago Bausili, and Minister of Deregulation and State Transformation Federico Sturzenegger on an initiative to reverse the reform pushed by Kirchnerism in 2012. Just three years ago, then-presidential candidate Javier Milei proposed «dynamiting» the Central Bank and defined the peso as «excrement.» Now, in the Casa Rosada, the approach seems to have changed.
The scenes of the next episodes are predictable. Santilli celebrating agreements, displaying executive ability, providing rhetorical alibis. But tensions with the verticalism of the Mileis are already emerging. They detest the autonomy of their subordinates. They like to keep everything for themselves. They seem like Peronists. Like Santilli.
