Argentine politics is upside down. While the big names of power crumble in the polls, a figure from the Trotskyist left emerges as the best-rated leader in the country. This is Myriam Bregman, national deputy for the PTS-FITU, who according to the latest survey by the University of San Andrés (Udesa) achieved 33% positive image and a negative differential of just -13 points, the lowest among the 24 politicians evaluated.
The study, conducted between the 3rd and 8th of this month with 1,000 interviews nationwide, leaves no one unscathed. Javier Milei, the libertarian president, accumulates 61% negative image. Cristina Kirchner, the former president, reaches 63%. Mauricio Macri, the former president, sinks with 66%. And Sergio Massa, the former official candidate, hits bottom with 68% rejection. Elisa Carrió, from Chaco, is also in the worst group, with 60% negative.
In this scenario of widespread collapse, Bregman stands out as the only leader who manages to balance the scales. Her 33% positive places her on the acceptance podium, far above the rest. Even her benchmate, Nicolás del Caño, also from PTS-FITU, appears in the top 10 of the best positioned.
The survey, which will be fully released in the coming days, reflects growing discontent with the economic policy of the libertarian government. Mobilizations and strikes increase, but the traditional opposition – from the PJ and the PRO – seems paralyzed. The Peronist union leaderships, far from channeling discontent, appear passive. This gap between social unrest and lack of representation partly explains the Bregman phenomenon.
The crisis of representation is so deep that even the parties that governed for decades fail to connect with the people. Milei, who came to power promising change, is already seen with the same eyes as the politicians he criticized. Cristina, Macri, and Massa, each with their own history, share the same fate: massive rejection.
In this context, the Trotskyist left seeks to capitalize on the sympathy generated by Bregman. Last weekend, the Socialist Workers’ Party (PTS) held its National Conference, where it debated how to strengthen a political alternative for the class-based left. The creation of new committees alongside Myriam Bregman was promoted, with the aim of coordinating struggles and taking steps toward a party of the new working class.
Additionally, it was voted to propose to the unity spaces and other left-wing organizations the idea of a large national mobilization for the second half of September. The idea is to leverage Bregman’s recognition to build a militant force that channels social discontent.
Meanwhile, the mainstream media try to minimize the phenomenon. But the numbers are stubborn: in a country where traditional politics is in intensive care, a left-wing deputy becomes the best-rated leader. Will it be the beginning of something new or just a mirage in the desert of representation? What is certain is that, for now, Myriam Bregman is the politician who comes out best in the picture.
