¡Temblá Colombia! De la Espriella se queda con la presidencia tras un balotaje de infarto

In an election day that kept all of Colombia on edge, outsider right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella was crowned the country’s new president after defeating ruling party senator Iván Cepeda in an extremely tight runoff. With 99.87% of polling stations counted, De la Espriella garnered 49.65% of the vote (12,945,490), against Cepeda’s 48.70% (12,698,334). The difference was a mere 247,156 votes, a margin that many sectors say casts doubt on the legitimacy of the result.

Current President Gustavo Petro was quick to react, and in a message posted on his social media, he stated that «due to the closeness of the election, no one can be proclaimed president» until a final recount is conducted. «It is the scrutiny that determines who is president. I obey the judges,» Petro emphasized, later calling for «calm among citizens please.» In a tone that left no doubt about his displeasure, the outgoing president added: «Reality shows us a country split in half, and foreign interference robbing us of our freedom. A national agreement is necessary if we want to maintain the homeland and peace in the years to come.»

Voter turnout exceeded 63%, a high number by Colombian standards, reflecting the polarization gripping the country. Blank votes accounted for 1.63%, while the remainder were invalid votes. De la Espriella, a media entrepreneur who burst onto the political scene with an anti-establishment message and promises of a firm hand against insecurity and corruption, will take office on August 7 and govern until 2030. His victory represents a radical shift in Colombian politics, which had seen Petro as the first left-wing president in history.

But the celebratory mood was tinged with controversy. Petro’s statements about «foreign interference» and his demand for a full vote recount open a scenario of uncertainty. De la Espriella’s camp responded harshly, accusing Petro of «not knowing how to lose» and trying to destabilize the democratic process. «Colombia has already spoken at the ballot box. We will not allow the popular will to be tarnished,» a spokesperson for the president-elect fired back.

Meanwhile, streets in Bogotá and other cities saw both celebrations and protests. Groups aligned with the ruling party denounce alleged fraud and demand that De la Espriella not be proclaimed president until all tally sheets are reviewed. Supporters of the winner, on the other hand, took to the streets to celebrate with flags and chants, though tension is palpable in the air.

The country is split in two. The difference of just 247,000 votes reflects a deeply divided society, where hate speech and mutual accusations set the agenda. De la Espriella faces the enormous challenge of governing for all Colombians, but his polarizing profile and confrontational style do not bode well for a smooth administration. For now, the recount ordered by Petro could take days or weeks, and uncertainty reigns.

What is certain is that Colombia experienced a historic election, with a result that left everyone on the edge of their seats. Now, the ball is in the court of the electoral judges, who must decide whether De la Espriella’s victory is confirmed or whether the country heads toward an unprecedented political crisis.
