A 27 años de la tragedia de John F. Kennedy Jr.: ¿error fatal o nueva maldición de los Kennedy?

On July 16, 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr., the son of the assassinated former president, died in a plane crash off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. Traveling with him were his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and her sister, Lauren Bessette. Twenty-seven years after the event that moved the world, doubts remain: was it pilot error, or is there something more behind the tragedy?

John F. Kennedy Jr. was 38 years old and had a promising career as a lawyer and editor. He had bought a Piper Saratoga in May of that year, and although he held a pilot’s license, he had only logged 310 flight hours, barely 36 in that model and very few at night without an instructor. That July 16, despite poor weather conditions, he decided to fly from Caldwell Airport in New Jersey to Martha’s Vineyard to drop off Lauren with friends and then continue to Hyannis Port for the wedding of his cousin Rory Kennedy.

The airport controller warned him about the weather, but Kennedy Jr. took off anyway. At 8:38 p.m., he had his last communication with the tower, indicating his route. Then the plane disappeared from radar. Around 9:41 p.m., the aircraft plunged into a dive 12 kilometers from its destination, crashing into the Atlantic Ocean. All three occupants died instantly.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that the probable cause was the pilot’s spatial disorientation. Without a clear visual horizon due to haze and darkness, Kennedy likely entered a «graveyard spiral,» where the pilot believes he is flying level but is actually descending in a tight turn. Radar data showed erratic maneuvers: a right turn, a sharp climb, a left turn, and a final descending spiral at over 1,432 meters per minute.

Investigators examined the wreckage recovered from the seabed at a depth of 35 meters and found no mechanical failures: the engine, propeller, and control systems were functioning correctly. However, the black box was not present, and Kennedy was not certified for instrument flight rules (IFR), which would have been crucial in those conditions.

But the official version did not convince everyone. The Kennedy family, marked by the president’s assassination in 1963 and other tragedies, once again became the target of conspiracy theories. Some speak of a curse; others, of possible sabotage. However, there is no evidence to support those claims. What is certain is that the accident closed another chapter in the history of one of the most emblematic dynasties in the United States.

The bodies of John, Carolyn, and Lauren were found with their seatbelts on, and their ashes were scattered at the crash site in a private ceremony. Twenty-seven years later, the myth lives on, fueled by mystery and the pain of a family that seems unable to find peace.
