AMD is not falling behind in the artificial intelligence race. While Nvidia dominates the market with its GPUs and systems like DGX, Lisa Su’s company has just unveiled Helios, a rack-scale system designed specifically for AI workloads. The news: Helios will begin shipping to customers during the second half of this year. But what exactly is it, and why does it matter?
What is Helios?
Helios is not a simple chip; it is a complete system that occupies an entire rack. It includes AMD Instinct GPUs, AMD EPYC CPUs, Infinity Fabric interconnects, and optimized software to manage the training of large AI models. In plain terms: it is a turnkey solution for companies and data centers to run models like GPT or LLaMA without having to build everything from scratch. AMD bets that its open ecosystem, based on ROCm and industry standards, will give it an edge over Nvidia’s closed ecosystem with CUDA.
Why is it important?
Until now, Nvidia has had a virtual monopoly on enterprise AI hardware. Its A100 and H100 GPUs are the most widely used, but they are expensive and hard to come by. AMD wants to break that dominance by offering a more flexible and potentially cheaper alternative. Helios is designed to scale: multiple racks can be connected to form huge clusters. For Argentine companies, this could mean more options when choosing AI infrastructure, perhaps with lower costs in the long run. Additionally, being a complete system reduces implementation complexity.
However, it is not all rosy. AMD’s AI software, ROCm, still has less adoption than CUDA, although it has improved significantly. AMD will have to prove that Helios performs at the level of Nvidia’s systems in real-world benchmarks.
