This Saturday, the 25th, starting at 3:00 PM, Parque Centenario will host a key coordination meeting. Called by various organizations, the goal is to define strategies to confront the so-called ‘Inviolability of Private Property Law,’ which the government is pushing in the Senate. The meeting aims to gather strength ahead of August 6, when Congress will resume consideration of a bill that, according to critics, will sell the country to the highest bidder.
The text, drafted by presidential advisor Federico Sturzenegger, eliminates all limits on land purchases by foreigners. It even allows foreign states, such as the United Kingdom, to acquire Argentine territory with only the approval of the current governor. ‘Englishman Joe Lewis already took over Lake Escondido; with this law they are going for much more,’ warn the organizers.
But it’s not just about land. The same hand pushing foreign ownership is the one that emptied the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA): 62 layoffs, with Gendarmerie raiding the headquarters and the CAREM reactor, designed entirely in the country, completely halted. The CNEA produces 80% of the radioisotopes used to treat cancer throughout the region. ‘Sovereignty is not a map hung in a classroom: it’s who owns what’s inside,’ fire back from the Socialist Workers’ Party (PTS), which distributed a flyer calling for strengthening coordination.
On August 6, the Senate will attempt to vote on the law after a first attempt failed on Thursday the 16th. On that occasion, popular pressure forced Security Minister Patricia Bullrich to call for a recess. ‘The entire country had just said that the Malvinas are Argentine and that the territory is not for sale, and they didn’t have the guts to vote for the handover,’ activists recall.
Now, the call is clear: surround Congress so that senators cannot vote. ‘Inside the chamber, no one will stop it,’ they warn. ‘The quorum on June 16 was provided by La Libertad Avanza, the UCR, the PRO, and the governors of Salta, Neuquén, and Misiones. Peronism doesn’t even reject the law: it presented a report that discusses how much land to hand over and leaves the decision to each governor, the same scheme of provincializing that already emptied the Glaciers Law of content.’
Saturday’s meeting aims to organize assemblies in every workplace, school, and neighborhood. ‘Let unions and student centers stop being passive and truly call for action,’ they demand. Additionally, on the 27th, the IMF director arrives to set conditions. ‘Let her know that here we defend sovereignty in the streets,’ they conclude.
