This Friday, July 10, winter makes itself fully felt. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued orange and yellow alerts for rain, snow, and extreme cold affecting several Argentine provinces. The most severe warning, orange level, applies to the mountainous area of Mendoza, where snowfall of 10 to 15 centimeters is expected, with possible higher peaks. There is also an orange alert for rain in northwestern Neuquén, with accumulations of 30 to 60 millimeters.
Yellow alerts, meanwhile, cover Neuquén and Río Negro, where rain and snow are forecast with accumulations of 10 to 30 millimeters of water and 10 to 20 centimeters of snow in higher areas. In Santa Cruz, the alert is for extreme cold, with minimum temperatures possibly reaching -2°C.
The SMN recommends the population take precautions: avoid going out unless necessary, do not take out trash, clean drains, stay away from flood-prone areas, do not cross flooded streets, and drive with extreme caution. It also asks to prepare an emergency kit with water, food, first aid kit, battery-powered radio, and flashlight, and to have the numbers of Civil Protection, Firefighters, and Police on hand.
In Buenos Aires City, Friday starts with mostly cloudy skies, a low of 10°C and a high of just 13°C. Winds will blow up to 12 km/h. For Saturday, a slight improvement is expected: the high would climb to 15°C, but the sky will remain overcast. In Buenos Aires province, temperatures will range between 11°C and 17°C, with variable clouds.
The rest of the country also suffers from the cold. In Catamarca, the low will be 1°C and the high 19°C; in Chaco, between 10°C and 23°C; in Chubut, between 4°C and 9°C; in Córdoba, between 7°C and 20°C; in Corrientes, between 10°C and 23°C; in Entre Ríos, between 8°C and 19°C; in Formosa, between 10°C and 25°C; in Jujuy, between 5°C and 23°C; in La Pampa, between 6°C and 15°C; in La Rioja, between 6°C and 20°C; and in Mendoza, between 4°C and 15°C.
Further north, in Misiones, temperatures will range from 9°C to 22°C; in Neuquén, from 5°C to 13°C; in Río Negro, from 6°C to 9°C; in Salta, from 2°C to 23°C; in San Juan, from 3°C to 18°C; in San Luis, from 7°C to 18°C; in Santa Cruz, from -2°C to 5°C; in Santa Fe, from 8°C to 19°C; in Santiago del Estero, from 4°C to 23°C; in Tierra del Fuego, from 0°C to 4°C; and in Tucumán, from 8°C to 21°C.
Winter gives no respite. Authorities insist on extreme caution, especially in areas under orange alert, where phenomena can disrupt daily activities and create risks. Stay informed and do not let your guard down.
