The National Meteorological Service (SMN) launched a series of orange and yellow alerts this Monday, July 20, putting 11 Argentine provinces on edge. The agency, under the Ministry of Defense, warns of severe storms, heavy snowfall, persistent rain, and winds that could exceed 100 kilometers per hour.
Orange alert: Corrientes under electrical storms
The province of Corrientes is the hardest hit with an orange alert for storms. The SMN forecast that the area will be affected by isolated strong storms, some severe, accompanied by intense rainfall in short periods, hail of various sizes, significant electrical activity, and gusts that may exceed 90 km/h. Accumulations of between 40 and 70 millimeters are expected, which could be exceeded locally.
Orange snowfall: Mendoza and San Juan under snow
Western Mendoza and southwestern San Juan are under an orange alert for intense and persistent snowfall. Snow accumulations of between 100 and 150 centimeters are expected throughout the alert period, with the possibility of being exceeded. The situation will be accompanied by strong winds, possible whiteout conditions, and reduced visibility, complicating traffic on high mountain routes.
Yellow alert: Storms in Misiones and southeastern Corrientes
Southeastern Corrientes and Misiones have a yellow alert for isolated storms of varying intensity, some strong or locally severe, with heavy rainfall, hail, gusts, and electrical activity. Accumulations of between 20 and 50 millimeters are expected, which may be exceeded locally.
Yellow snowfall: La Rioja, San Juan, and Mendoza
The provinces of La Rioja, San Juan, and Mendoza are also under a yellow alert for intense and persistent snowfall, with accumulations of between 100 and 150 centimeters, strong winds, possible whiteout conditions, and reduced visibility.
Yellow rain: Buenos Aires and Río Negro
The province of Buenos Aires and Río Negro have a yellow alert for persistent rain, with accumulations of between 10 and 20 millimeters, which could be exceeded locally.
Yellow winds: San Juan, La Rioja, Catamarca, Tucumán, Salta, and Jujuy
Areas of San Juan, La Rioja, Catamarca, Tucumán, Salta, and Jujuy are under a yellow alert for westerly winds with speeds between 60 and 80 km/h and gusts that may reach 100 km/h, which could cause reduced visibility.
Zonda wind: Catamarca, Tucumán, Salta, and Jujuy
Additionally, a yellow alert was issued for Zonda wind in sectors of central Catamarca, western Tucumán, central Salta, and central Jujuy, with speeds between 30 and 45 km/h and gusts that may exceed 70 km/h. The phenomenon can cause reduced visibility, a sudden rise in temperatures, and very low relative humidity conditions.
Gray Monday in the AMBA
In the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, Monday will start with cloudy and humid conditions, cool to mild weather, mostly cloudy, and isolated rain cannot be ruled out. The minimum temperature will be 8 degrees and the maximum will reach 14°C.
