Winter is hitting hard and the National Meteorological Service (SMN) held nothing back: this Friday, July 24, there are red and yellow alerts for extreme cold and snow that have five Argentine provinces on edge. The official agency, under the Ministry of Defense, issued a red warning for the province of Santa Cruz, where the minimum temperature could plummet to -11 °C. In these areas, the SMN warns that the phenomenon can affect all people, without exception. And for good reason: the polar cold is relentless.
But that’s not all. A yellow alert is also in effect in Tierra del Fuego, meaning the health effects on citizens could be significant. The SMN is not messing around: when there is a yellow alert, the risk is real, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses.
Additionally, the agency confirmed a yellow alert for snow in the extreme south of Santa Cruz and the entire mountain range of Río Negro, Chubut, Neuquén, and Tierra del Fuego. «The area will be affected by persistent snow of varying intensity,» the SMN detailed in its statement. And the numbers are chilling: expected accumulated snow between 20 and 40 centimeters in mountainous areas, and between 10 and 30 centimeters in low-lying areas. They even warn that these values could be exceeded locally. In other words, we must prepare for the worst.
Meanwhile, in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, the outlook is not as extreme but still calls for bundling up. This Friday started with mostly cloudy skies, and throughout the day a cool environment is expected, with overcast skies and isolated showers not ruled out. The minimum temperature will be 12 degrees and the maximum will reach 15°C. Nothing like the south, but enough that no one goes out in short sleeves.
The news hits just as the country is on alert for the cold wave that has already claimed victims in other regions. Authorities recommend taking extreme precautions: avoid exposure to the cold, dress in layers, drink hot fluids, and pay attention to children and the elderly. In red alert areas, the SMN suggests not leaving home unless strictly necessary.
Meanwhile, emergency services are on standby. Roads in mountainous areas could become impassable, and closures and delays are already anticipated. The provincial government of Santa Cruz has activated contingency protocols, but the magnitude of the phenomenon puts the entire region at risk. The cold does not forgive, and this time it seems to be coming with full force.
