Ana Acosta: el drama de Fugazot sin techo ni plata y el café que la salva

The death of María Rosa Fugazot left the cast of Viejas chorras in shock. Ana Acosta, who shared the stage with the legendary actress, broke her silence and revealed chilling details of her final days. The planned tour has been suspended, and the future of the play is uncertain.

«We had finished the season at the Picadilly and were starting the tour, because the idea was to continue until summer to do a season in Mar del Plata. Now I don’t know what will happen,» confessed Acosta, visibly affected. The actress made it clear that continuing without Fugazot is unthinkable for her: «When someone from the cast passes away, I no longer feel like it. I can’t even get on stage because I start remembering and I don’t have a good time.»

But what is most striking is the snapshot of the economic situation Fugazot was going through. «María Rosa was very sad after her son died. She was devastated, but she fought back. I don’t know what happened. I think she was really troubled by the fact that her contract was ending and she wasn’t sure what would become of her life… She seemed very worried about that,» revealed Acosta.

The actress did not hesitate to put her finger on the sore spot: «She worked for 70 years and didn’t have a roof. The roof she bought she gave to her son. She wasn’t sick, but lately she was very worried about her financial situation. And I’m telling this so we are aware of what happens to us actors. If you don’t keep working, it’s very hard. No one can live on a pension, but for actors it’s more complicated.»

The last meeting between the two was two Sundays before Fugazot’s passing. Acosta had invited her to her café to celebrate a birthday, but the actress couldn’t attend. «The last time I saw her was on stage, and she had done a very good performance. I think she knew she was saying goodbye, in a way… That worry about her future was troubling her. She was very down because she didn’t know what would become of her life and where she would live,» she recalled with pain.

Amid the sadness, Acosta also found space to talk about her new venture: Fats Café, a coffee shop in Caballito that she opened with her family. The name comes from the initials of Fabián, Ana, Talia, and Stefania. «We opened last year on a piece of land we had bought in 1998. During the pandemic, my husband and I decided that the next venture would be outdoors. Our daughter Stefi was already studying to be a chef, so we thought of a café,» she explained.

The venue has a terrace and a semi-covered area designed for children with autism and ADHD. «They can come and go as they please,» highlighted Acosta, who besides being an actress is a designer and owner of Ana Acosta Moda, a store she has maintained for 18 years in Once.

«I’m cautious. That’s what I learned from my parents,» she stated. And for her, having an extra income is key in a field as unstable as theater. «If you don’t keep working, it’s very hard. No one can live on a pension,» she insisted.

Happy memories also emerge amid the tears. «We had a great time. We laughed a lot. In one rehearsal, Cristina Tejedor said ‘my concubine’ instead of ‘my sister-in-law.’ During the performance it happened again and we cracked up,» recounted Acosta, who still doesn’t know if the play will continue. «It’s a shame,» she concluded.
