Ernestina Pais died this Friday, June 26, in a tragic railway accident in San Isidro. Police sources confirmed she was driving her vehicle when she crossed a level crossing with the barrier down and was run over by the Tren de la Costa. The news hit the artistic community and her followers like a bombshell, who are still in shock.
Just hours before the accident, the renowned journalist had posted a story on her Instagram profile thanking the number of tickets sold for the play she starred in, along with the phrase: ‘Thank you life.’ A message that today resonates with chilling rawness.
The play Ernestina Pais starred in was El divorcio del año, and alongside her were Romina Gaetani, Diego Ramos, Juan Palomino, and Rochi Igarzábal under the direction of José María Muscari. Precisely, at the time of the accident, she was traveling to the theater in the Buenos Aires town of Tigre, where she had a scheduled performance at 9 p.m.
In the Instagram story she had posted and in which she thanked life for the number of sold-out shows, she said: ‘More cities, more laughter, more chaos. This is just the beginning.’ There, all the locations she would tour were shown: Luján, Tigre, Banfield, Pergamino, Junín, Bragado, 9 de Julio, Ramos Mejía, Berisso, Olavarría, Mar del Plata, San Miguel, Canning, San Martín, Montevideo (Uruguay), Mendoza, and San Juan.
In other Instagram stories that still appeared on her profile, Ernestina Pais highlighted one she exchanged with Eduardo Canzobre where they said they would see each other and hug at the performance she would give on July 8 in Ramos Mejía. The journalist also shared a tender and funny video in which she wished herself good night: ‘Good night to me, I love myself, you are everything to me,’ said the animated character kissing its own forehead.
Another story Ernestina had shared was of her own bar, Milión, a well-known restaurant in Recoleta specializing in cocktails and experiences. In that video, she announced they would start a cycle of Sessions Live Sets at the venue. Finally, before the final post where she thanked life, on the same Friday morning she reposted a video of a woman’s reflection on water and wrote: ‘Good morning.’
José María Muscari, director of the play El divorcio del año of which Ernestina Pais was a part, used his social media to say goodbye to the journalist: ‘Bye Ernes, may you be happy in your eternity. That’s how I say goodbye to you, happy and acting,’ he wrote.
The journalist was an important figure in Argentine radio and television. Among the milestones of her career, in 2009 she hosted the television program Caiga Quien Caiga (CQC) and was the only woman to hold that role on the show. Previously, she had been part of the panel of Mañanas Informales on Canal 13 with Jorge Guinzburg. She had begun collaborating with the comedian in the early 2000s on the historic show La Biblia y el Calefón.
